Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey could not hide his emotions than praise the defensive organisation of Ghana in their 0-0 draw game against European giants England.

The Black Stars defensive line has gone two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup without conceding a goal. What surprised many, was how the back line kept England attackers away from goal on Tuesday night in Boston.

England recorded 19 shots as against Ghana’s two, but had only two on target.

The Black Stars faced 30 shots across their opening fixtures, but remain among only four teams still unbeaten defensively at the Mundial, underlining their resilience at the back.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Odartey Lamptey lauded the growing understanding and cohesion between the two newly found center-backs Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku. Highlighting their calmness but executing task at the back.

“I was surprised when the two centre-backs were paired. This is their first tournament. They fumbled in their first game, but yesterday they were superb. Gideon has the experience. The back four was solid,” he said.

Lamptey also praised goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, saying his performances have not come as a surprise given his consistency at club level with Hearts of Oak SC.

“I’m not surprised Benjamin Asare is doing well in the national team; he has worked hard for this,” he added.

The draw against England leaves Ghana in a strong position in Group L with 4 points and on the brink of qualification for the Round of 32 ahead of their final group fixture.

The four times Africa Champions will face Croatia on Saturday, June 27, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 GMT.
