The Northern Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (NEDCo) has commenced a comprehensive maintenance and enhancement programme to address distribution challenges and improve supply reliability across its operational areas.
As part of this effort, transformer replacement programme and broader system upgrade works are already underway in Tamale and surrounding areas, aimed at improving network stability, addressing low voltage and reducing outages.
The initiative follows a system-wide review of the distribution network, which identified key operational gaps, infrastructure constraints, and service delivery challenges. These findings are guiding targeted interventions to strengthen network performance.
Priority actions will include vegetation control on 78 feeders, upgrades to overloaded substations, and the replacement of damaged and overloaded transformers.
At the Berekum Primary Substation, a new 20/26 MVA transformer is being installed to relieve an overloaded 10 MVA unit, with a similar upgrade planned for the Wa Primary Substation. At the Techiman Bulk Supply Point, a 66 MVA transformer is being installed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).
To further address capacity constraints, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is procuring 500 distribution transformers for deployment in affected communities.
During these maintenance activities, temporary power interruptions may occur to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
NEDCo will provide advance notice of planned outages through its official communication channels.
An April 14 statement from the Energy Ministry said the government remains committed to delivering a stable, reliable, and consistent power supply through sustained collaboration with NEDCo and other stakeholders.
