However, the main hurdle remains infrastructure, particularly the ongoing renovations at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The stadium, earmarked as the potential host venue, is currently undergoing upgrades, with plans to install a new tartan track.

Korir disclosed that discussions are underway between stadium management and the government regarding the installation, with Athletics Kenya pushing for the globally renowned Mondo company to handle the project.

“It has to come from us to ensure that we inform the government that this is what we need, because if we do not explain to them, they might not understand the requirements,” he explained, adding that the federation will continue lobbying to ensure the right contractor is selected.

Beyond infrastructure, Kenya’s bid has also involved strategic engagement with Diamond League stakeholders. Korir confirmed that Athletics Kenya officials have already held meetings with board members across the circuit, positioning the country as a potential replacement should an existing host withdraw.

“It is a matter of discussion with them, so that if one pulls out, we are in the list that we will get that. We are hoping that one country pulls out, and immediately Kenya will be given,” he said.

Korir further revealed that the bid documentation is nearing completion, with Athletics Kenya president working alongside national leadership to finalize and submit the proposal to World Athletics.

Encouragingly, he hinted that Kenya could secure a Diamond League meeting even before hosting a future World Championships, citing strong backing from World Athletics.

“The chances are very high because World Athletics are eager to give us one of the best events to happen on Kenyan soil,” he noted.

Currently, Africa is represented by only one Diamond League meeting in Rabat, leaving a significant gap for another continental host.

The 2026 Diamond League season will begin with an Asian swing through Shanghai, and Xiamen, before moving to Rabat on 31 May.

The circuit will then shift to Europe with stops in Rome, Stockholm, Oslo, Doha, and Paris, followed by the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

Top global stars are expected to headline the series, including Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet. At the same time, sprint showdowns featuring Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles are anticipated in the European legs.

The season will conclude with the Diamond League Final in Brussels after qualification rounds in Lausanne, Silesia, and Zurich.
