Julius Debrah has called for a bold shift in Ghana’s economic direction, stressing the need for urgent reforms to tackle rising youth unemployment and long-standing structural challenges.
Addressing participants at the Kwahu Business Forum in Ghana’s Eastern Region on Friday, March 3, 2026, the Chief of Staff highlighted the growing pressure on the country to create sustainable economic opportunities for its youthful population.
He noted that while motivational messages have their place, they are no substitute for real, practical opportunities that enable young people to build livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
“Ghana is a youthful nation, and the demand for meaningful employment is pressing. Our young people do not merely need inspiration — they need real pathways to work, productivity, ownership, and dignity,” he said.
Debrah argued that a major overhaul of Ghana’s economic framework is needed, with manufacturing positioned at the centre of this transformation. According to him, industrialisation remains the most effective way to generate large-scale employment and drive long-term economic growth.
He explained that a strong manufacturing base does more than create factory jobs—it stimulates activity across multiple sectors, including agriculture, logistics, technology, marketing, and finance. This interconnected growth, he said, has the potential to significantly expand economic opportunities nationwide.
“Manufacturing creates these opportunities at scale,” he stated, adding that it strengthens supply chains, boosts exports, and enhances the country’s foreign exchange stability. He further emphasised that relying on raw commodity exports is no longer sufficient for a resilient and inclusive economy.
The forum, now a major fixture on Ghana’s Easter calendar, brought together more than 1,000 participants, including entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers. Organisers say the gathering aims to foster partnerships, highlight investment opportunities, and equip businesses with the tools needed for long-term sustainability.
Participants are also engaging in masterclasses and discussions led by experienced business figures, particularly from the Kwahu area, focusing on strategies for building resilient enterprises.
The renewed push for manufacturing aligns with broader national efforts to diversify Ghana’s economy, create jobs, and strengthen its competitiveness within the West African region.
