Abimbola Olugbenga has officially assumed duty as the 49th Commissioner of Police in Oyo State.

Olungbenga takes over from Olufemi Haruna, who served as the 48th Commissioner of Police from April 1, 2025.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.

The new CP, described as a seasoned officer, was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and has since built a career spanning several states and key operational units.

A graduate of Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Olugbenga has undergone extensive professional training, including courses at the Police Staff College, Jos, Police College Kaduna, and the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja.

Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities across Lagos, Abia, Delta, Borno, Kano, Yobe, Oyo, Kogi, and Bauchi states, handling operational, investigative, and administrative roles.

His previous postings include Divisional Police Officer in several divisions in Delta State, Police Component Commander under Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Oyo State, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Safer Highway unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja, and Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Weapons and Tactics at the Force Headquarters.

The command noted that Olugbenga’s service has been marked by proactive policing, strategic crime prevention, and effective leadership, earning him commendations for professionalism and dedication.

“As he assumes office, the command is confident that under his leadership, security of lives and property will be further strengthened, and public confidence in policing will be enhanced,” the statement read.
