For too long, persons with disabilities in Nigeria have been met with sympathy, well-meaning gestures, charitable handouts, and sometimes pity. But sympathy alone changes nothing.

At News Central TV’s recent Town Hall for Persons with Disabilities in Asaba, Delta State, Attendees shared stories of struggle but also mapped pathways forward. The one-of-a-kind fostered dialogue, empowerment, and actionable solutions for inclusivity.

The event, proudly sponsored by The Albino Foundation Africa (TAF Africa), brought together over 200 participants, including persons with disabilities, community leaders, policymakers, advocates, and healthcare experts. Held at Bon Hotel in Asaba, Delta state, the town hall addressed critical issues, including access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and policy reforms to enhance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Delta State and beyond.

Filled with emotional moments, participants were moved throughout the Town Hall. Sola Idowu, a visually impaired teacher in English, shared his challenge in securing a job since 2014 due to discrimination and a lack of inclusion.

Chinedu Uwabuofu also described how Delta State University’s inaccessible classrooms and lack of disability-friendly spaces hindered his ability to study effectively, forcing him to sit outside classes and shared spaces.

“One thing I want to appeal to the state and federal government is to create a special seat in the National and State Houses of Assembly for persons with Disabilities because you cannot initiate laws that will improve our lives without us being in the seat of initiating those laws”, Isaac Odjuwu, President of ISJID, said.

His Royal Majesty, Epiphany Azinge, the 14th Asagba of Asaba, also commented, stating his support that “we have passed the stage of formulation of policies to now implementation of laws that have since been passed”.

Other key speakers, including Jake Epelle, representing TAF Africa, and local government officials, shared insights on breaking down barriers and promoting equal participation.

Interactive sessions allowed attendees to voice challenges and propose community-driven initiatives, with News Central committing to ongoing media advocacy for these causes.

News Central’s Managing Director, Kayode Akintemi, also addressed the gathering, stating, “This town hall underscores News Central’s dedication to amplifying marginalized voices and driving social change,” said Mr. Akintemi.

“We are grateful to all our partners and sponsors for their unwavering support in making this platform a reality. Together, we are building a more inclusive Nigeria.”

The event aligns with News Central TV’s mission to engage communities through impactful storytelling and public discourse, particularly on issues affecting vulnerable groups.
