The Kwara State Chairperson of the Nigeria League of Women Voters, Alhaja Baliqees Oladimeji, has called for increased participation of women in politics and decision-making positions across Nigeria.
Oladimeji made the call in a statement issued on Sunday to mark the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day, urging stakeholders to create more opportunities that will enable women to actively contribute to governance and leadership.
She commended Nigerian women for their resilience, intellect and dedication to national development, noting that women continue to play critical roles in governance, community development and nation-building.
According to her, the contributions of women in various sectors highlight the need for inclusive policies that empower them to thrive and participate meaningfully in political and economic decision-making.
“This year’s celebration reminds us of the strength and contributions of Nigerian women who continue to make a significant impact in governance and community development,” she said.
Oladimeji noted that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” emphasises the need to invest in women through mentorship, education and leadership opportunities in order to foster societal growth.
She said the organisation is using the occasion to launch a campaign advocating support for at least five women to contest each elective position in future elections as part of efforts to boost women’s representation in political leadership.
Oladimeji, who also serves as the Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria, stressed the need to mainstream gender equality in public policies across the country.
She urged governments, political parties and other stakeholders to dismantle structural barriers that limit women’s access to leadership positions.
According to her, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day calls for action beyond rhetoric, including stronger legal protections and policies that guarantee equal opportunities for women.
“We need to encourage more women to run for elective positions so that we can have the numbers required to influence policies that benefit the most vulnerable people in society,” she said.
She also called on women across the country to embrace unity, resilience and collaboration in their quest for greater representation in politics and governance.
Oladimeji added that building a society where women enjoy dignity, respect and equal opportunities requires collective commitment from both men and women.
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also advocating gender equality worldwide.
In Nigeria, women remain significantly underrepresented in political offices despite constituting nearly half of the country’s population.
