Kenya Airways to get new board before the end of the week, CS Chirchir

Kenya Airways will have a new board in place before the end of the week as part of efforts to stabilise and strengthen the national carrier.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said on Tuesday that the process of appointing new directors is at an advanced stage and is being conducted in line with corporate governance requirements.

President William Ruto last week committed to finalising the constitution of the board, which will comprise men and women tasked with driving the airline’s transformation as part of broader national reforms.

“I want to confirm that as minister we have put the processes in place and they are going through the due governance processes of KQ as a public listed company, they have to be taken through the due process,” said Chirchir.

“I want to assure you that maybe by the end of this week, we should be getting a new board to support the seats that are currently vacant.”

Chirchir said the government is keen to have a corporate board capable of steering the airline through a competitive and challenging global aviation environment.

The reconstitution of the board comes as the government moves to overhaul infrastructure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the airline’s main hub and Kenya’s primary international gateway.

The Kenya Airways board of directors is responsible for providing strategic leadership, corporate governance oversight, financial stewardship and policy direction for the airline.

It sets the long-term strategy, oversees financial performance and restructuring plans, appoints and supervises senior management, including the chief executive officer, ensures compliance with aviation, corporate and international regulations, and safeguards shareholder interests.

Kenya Airways is partly owned by the Government of Kenya and private shareholders. The board typically includes government representatives, independent non-executive directors and representatives of major institutional shareholders.
