Tuchel told to pick Chalobah over Maguire for 2026 World Cup

TalkSPORT pundits have strongly advocated for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, praising his consistency and suggesting he should edge out Harry Maguire for a spot.

On talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea YouTube show, host Olivia Buzaglo hailed the 26-year-old as Chelsea’s most reliable centre-back this season. “A player who I think has come on leaps and bounds is Trevoh Chalobah. He’s been an absolute rock at the back,” she said. “He has been Chelsea’s most consistent centre-back. It’s now, without Levi Colwill, who plays next to Trevoh.”

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy echoed the sentiment, calling Chalobah “outstanding” and a guaranteed starter. “Trevoh’s been outstanding. You know what you’re going to get. You are so secure in what Trevoh’s going to give us,” Cundy added. “I think he is probably one of the names on the team sheet that goes in there… Trevoh’s been as consistent as anyone in this team this season. No doubt about that.”

Chalobah has started nearly every Premier League match for Chelsea in the 2025/26 campaign, providing stability amid injury issues for teammates like Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile. He has impressed under managers Enzo Maresca and current boss Liam Rosenior.

With England heading to the World Cup co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Tuchel faces tough selection decisions in defence. Chalobah earned a late call-up to Tuchel’s November squad as a replacement but did not feature, leaving him with just one cap from his June 2025 debut against Senegal.

Cundy acknowledged the competition, noting Maguire’s late resurgence due to experience, but leaned toward younger, in-form options. “It’s going to be touch and go… Everyone fit? I mean, I’m going [Ezri] Konsa and [Marc] Guehi. That’s probably our best two centre-back partnership for England,” he said.

He further argued that Chalobah’s club form should count strongly: “He has been as consistent as anyone. In terms of English centre-halves, the same rules apply… Tuchel knows him and there’s a very strong chance that he’ll be in there. I think we’ve got to look at the next squad.”
