Ghana, US deepen ties in fisheries and aquaculture development

Ghana and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector following a courtesy call by a delegation from the U.S. Embassy in Accra on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Chief of Mission, Rolf Olson, used the meeting to explore new areas of collaboration and to reinforce bilateral efforts aimed at promoting sustainable fisheries management and responsible aquaculture development.

Mr Olson emphasised that the United States shares Ghana’s concerns over illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, describing it as a global challenge that threatens marine ecosystems, livelihoods, and food security.

He noted that the U.S. Government remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen governance, enhance sustainability, and unlock private-sector investment across the fisheries value chain.

Mr Olson also highlighted emerging business and investment opportunities within Ghana’s fisheries sector, indicating that deeper collaboration could attract technical expertise, innovative technologies, and responsible investment to drive sector growth.

Responding, Ms Arthur reiterated the Government’s focus on aquaculture as a strategic priority, citing its potential to boost economic growth, create jobs for youth and women, and improve national food security.

She outlined key capacity gaps in the sector, including the need for enhanced vessel monitoring systems to improve surveillance at sea and stronger fish health management frameworks to support a modern and resilient aquaculture industry.

The Minister stressed that strategic partnerships with international allies such as the United States were essential to addressing these challenges.

She noted that cooperation in technology transfer, research, monitoring, and enforcement would significantly advance Ghana’s efforts toward sustainable fisheries management and long-term transformation of the sector.

The meeting underscored the shared resolve of both countries to protect marine resources, promote responsible investment, and deepen collaboration in support of a sustainable and prosperous fisheries industry.
