Kalu Clears Air On Viral Video, Backs Electronic Result Transmission

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has restated his support for the electronic transmission of election results.

He also dismissed a viral video that claimed he once opposed the process.

Naija News reports that he spoke on Tuesday after the Senate held an emergency plenary to review parts of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The lawmaker, who represents Abia North, explained that the amended Clause 60(3) of the bill allows presiding officers to send election results electronically once Form EC8A has been properly filled and signed at polling units.

He said this makes electronic transmission the main method in places where the required technology is available and working.

However, he noted that in areas where the system fails or cannot function, the signed Form EC8A will still serve as the valid record of results.

Kalu said the new arrangement creates a balance by allowing technology to be used while also protecting voters in communities with weak network coverage.

According to him, the process ensures that no voter is left out because of poor connectivity or technical issues.

His office also addressed a video circulating online in which he appeared to oppose electronic transmission.

The footage shows senators wearing face masks and was recorded during the 9th Senate in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The office stated that the clip is old and does not reflect his current position.

It added that at no time during the 10th Senate has Kalu stood against electronic transmission of results.

Kalu explained that debates during the 9th Senate were shaped by concerns at the time, including limited access to computers and unstable power supply.

He said some misunderstandings followed changes made to motions during discussions, which later led to confusion about his stance.
