A mother, identified as Saviour Kwartemaa in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region, has recounted her painful experience after her newborn baby girl died during an emergency transfer carried out in a taxi due to limited medical resources.

According to an adomonline.com report on February 6, 2026 the baby was delivered at a maternity home at Nobeko near Kukuom but developed life-threatening breathing difficulties immediately after birth, necessitating urgent medical attention.

Kwartemaa said she was unable to accompany her baby during the transfer because of complications she suffered after delivery.

“After I gave birth, I was very weak, so they said the baby needed oxygen. My husband took her to the hospital at Kukuom because I couldn’t go due to my condition,” she explained.

Health workers at the Asunafo South District Hospital reportedly responded swiftly when the infant was referred, administering antibiotics, oxygen, suction, and manual ventilation to stabilise her condition despite shortages of essential medical equipment.

However, due to the lack of a functional ambulance and adequate neonatal support, the newborn was transported under stressful conditions and later passed away on Wednesday February 4, 2026.

“They tried their best, but it was too much stress for her little body. I couldn’t even name her before she left us. I have truly lost a treasure,” Saviour Kwartemaa recounted.

She further stated that although she delivered naturally, she experienced severe swelling and pain in her private part, which left her unable to walk.

“Just imagine nine months of pregnancy and all the stress you go through, only for your baby to suffer and die like that. It’s very sad,” she said.

The incident has renewed calls for improved emergency medical care in the Ahafo Region, particularly the need for functional ambulances, reliable oxygen supply, and strengthened neonatal care systems.
