Three men have been arrested by the police in the Wa West District for openly carrying firearms and ammunition without licences.

The arrests occurred on Monday, February 3, 2026, at Goziri, a community near Vieri, during a routine patrol by the district police team.

According to a press release from the Upper West Regional Police Command dated February 5, 2026, the officers sighted a group of five men armed with single-barrel guns and cutlasses, posing a potential threat to public safety.

“Upon noticing the approaching police patrol vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee the scene,” the statement said, adding that through swift and professional action, three of the men were apprehended.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Yahaya Samad, 27; Adams Alhassan, 37; and Yiritang Boosi, 35.

A search at the scene led to the seizure of three single-barrel guns, three cutlasses, and 23 BB cartridges.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they did not have licences to bear the firearms and ammunition.

The trio has been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako, and are expected to reappear in court on February 18, 2026.

Police says there are ongoing investigations to apprehend the remaining two suspects who managed to escape.

The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the patrol team for their vigilance and professionalism.

The Command also cautioned members of the public against carrying unlicensed firearms, urging them to regularise their weapons or face legal action.
