Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has called on Ghanaians to view the legacy of Dr Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah as a national heritage that transcends partisan politics.

In a statement make available to GhanaWeb to mark the 61st anniversary of Dr Danquah’s death, Agyemang described the late statesman as “one of the foremost intellectual architects of our nation whose ideas continue to shape Ghana’s constitutional and democratic life.”

He noted that while Dr Danquah’s contributions have often been celebrated within his political tradition, his true national stature is reflected in the respect accorded him by people and institutions that did not share his political ideology.

“History is often most honest when it speaks across divisions,” Agyemang said in the statement, stressing that Dr Danquah’s legacy “belongs to the entire Republic and not to any single political inheritance.”

He cited testimonies from former parliamentary clerks, professional bodies, academics and lawmakers across the political divide as evidence of Dr Danquah’s enduring influence.

Quoting a former Clerk of Parliament, KB Ayensu, he recalled that after Dr Danquah left Parliament, “many in the House privately wished for a return to ‘the Danquah days.’”

Agyemang also referenced comments by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who had earlier stated that, “You cannot write the history of this country without recognising the contribution of JB Danquah.”

According to the Abuakwa South MP, Dr Danquah’s experience under the Preventive Detention Act remains a powerful reminder of the need to safeguard constitutional freedoms.

“To honour him is not merely to remember his past, but to ensure that the dark chapters he endured are never reopened in our present,” he said.

Dr Danquah, a lawyer, scholar and nationalist, died on February 4, 1965, while in detention.

His contributions to Ghana’s independence struggle, constitutional development and intellectual life continue to attract bipartisan recognition decades after his death.
