Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has raised alarms over declining officiating standards in the ongoing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

After a promising start that saw increased fan attendance across venues, recent weeks have been overshadowed by controversial refereeing decisions, drawing criticism from football stakeholders.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Afriyie acknowledged the positive beginnings of the season but expressed concern over its recent trajectory.

“The Premier League started very well, and attendance increased at the various venues, but the allegations and poor officiating have soiled the integrity of the league, and it is worrying and concerning.

“I don’t want to rate the league, but what I will say is that those running the league must sit up and do the right thing.

“I think that the GFA should consider changing the Chairman or Chairperson of the Referees Management Committee as part of the solution to dealing with poor officiating,” he added.

Despite the controversy, the scheduled matchday 21 fixtures will proceed as planned across the various stadia.
