The Black Stars could have had one of the most fearsome squads if every player of Ghanaian descent had naturalised to represent the national team.

Some of these players, thriving in Europe, chose to play for their birth countries and rejected the chance to play for Ghana.

This article looks at a potential Black Stars starting XI if such players had opted to play for Ghana.

In goal is young and promising goalkeeper Jayden Owusu-Oduro, who plays for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. He has represented the Netherlands at junior levels but is yet to make a senior debut.

In defence, promising Chelsea centre-back Josh Acheampong could have contributed massively. Unfortunately, the prodigy is already recognised as an English footballer, having featured for England’s junior national teams.

Isak Hien, a centre-back for Italian side Atalanta, represents Sweden, where he was raised. Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong, who plays for the Dutch national team, is another star of Ghanaian descent.

Other players who would have featured prominently include Nico Williams, the youngster who played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. His brother, Inaki Williams, switched allegiance to join the Black Stars and has been fairly impactful.

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku, who represents Belgium, is another player who could have played for Ghana.

Manchester United central midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also has Ghanaian roots but currently plays for England’s Three Lions.

Antoine Semenyo, who had the chance to choose between Ghana and England, opted for the Black Stars, a decision that has boosted his career, with brilliant performances for Manchester City.

Brilliant attacker Memphis Depay is among the biggest misses, as he chose to represent the Netherlands (Oranje).

Potential Starting XI:

GK: Jayden Owusu-Oduro

RB: Jeremie Frimpong

CB: Isak Hien

CB: Josh Acheampong

LB: Benjamin Henrichs

RW: Jeremy Doku

CM: Kobbie Mainoo

FW: Inaki Williams

LW: Nico Williams

ST: Antoine Semenyo

ST: Memphis Depay
