Accra, Jan.21, GNA – Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has inaugurated a seven-member panel to serve on the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 2026 Africa Armwrestling championship.
The committee, led by Mrs. Maame Afua Houadjeto, Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, ACI Gordon Saah, Mr. Edwin Amankwah, Mr. Gideon Hammond, Jessica Kwarteng and Mr. Andre Ackah, have been tasked to oversee the preparation and hosting of the event.
The Sports Minister described the moment as a remarkable opportunity, highlighting the impressive growth and evolution Armwrestling has undergone over the years.
He acknowledged that serving on the Local Organising Committee would be a demanding task but stressed that it would unlock powerful opportunities and shape a stronger future.
“President Charles Osei Asibey has in shaping Armwrestling played a significant role in shaping armwrestling to what it is today.
Under his leader the sport had grown beyond competition into a tool for sports employment, sports diplomacy and international visibility of Ghana,” he added.
The Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency urged the board to build on the momentum and carry the story forward by delivering one of the finest championships ever staged.
Mr. Iddie Adams gave a firm assurance that armwrestling would benefit from the sports fund, a move he said would fuel development, empower athletes, and elevate the sport to new heights.
He charged the team to approach their mandate with clarity of purpose, openness, and seamless coordination.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, commended the Minister for his commitment to armwrestling which he described as major boost to the federation’s efforts to elevate the sport.
He announced that the Championship would serve as the sole qualifier for the 2027 African Games in Egypt.
He added that Ghana’s role as host would provide a golden opportunity for Ghana to secure broader representation and a stronger presence in the continental event.
The 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship is set for May 1-2, 2026.
