The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has assured Ghanaians that cement prices will not increase.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 21, the Minister said her ministry has been meeting regularly with key players in the cement industry to address concerns about a possible price rise.
She explained that the existing legislative instrument (LI) on cement is still in force and must be followed by manufacturers.
“The LI on cement is there, and it is in force,” Ofosu-Adjare said. “It is on the basis of this LI that I met the cement manufacturers and reminded them of what the law requires.”
The Minister said all parties agreed that cement prices cannot be increased. She added that manufacturers must declare their ex-factory price at the beginning of each month, no later than the eighth day. Without this declaration, prices cannot be changed.
Minister Ofosu-Adjare also highlighted that cement prices have actually fallen over the past year. In 2024, 42.5 strength cement was sold at GHS117, but it is now selling at GHS107. The 32.5 strength cement, previously sold at GHS105, is now available between GHS80 and GHS85.
She said the ministry has worked with manufacturers using the LI to ensure price stability.
“The law is there, we enforce it. It will be recalled that in 2024, 42.5 strength of cement was sold at GHS117. Now it’s at GHS107. And 32.5 was sold at GHS105. Now you can get between GHS80 and GHS85. And so we have worked with them using the ally to ensure that prices are stable, and so this, I can see the ministry has been working with them.”
