The Traditional Authorities of the five areas that make up the Hohoe Municipality, Gbi (Hohoe), Wli, Alavanyo, Fodome, and Gbledi have expressed their gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for directing the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to begin processes to upgrade Hohoe to Metropolitan Status.
In a statement on Monday, January 19, signed by Togbega Gabusu VII on behalf of the Five (5) Traditional Areas, the Chiefs said the move fulfils a promise made by the President ahead of the 2024 General Elections and urged an expedited process to enable the proposed Hohoe Metropolis to drive development in the area.
According to the statement, the President’s reaffirmation of his commitment during the sod-cutting ceremony of the Oxygen City Housing Project in Ho demonstrates his dedication to decentralisation and accelerated development in the Volta Region.
The Traditional Authorities noted that the upgrade of Hohoe reflects its growing importance as an administrative, commercial, and transit hub along the Eastern Corridor. They added that Metropolitan status would unlock development opportunities, improve service delivery, and attract investment to the municipality.
They also highlighted key infrastructural needs that must be addressed to support the effective growth of the new metropolis, including improvements to road networks, upgrading the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe, development of Hohoe-UHAS Compose, and rehabilitation of the Eastern Corridor Road.
The Chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to peace, unity, and collaboration with government and stakeholders, expressing confidence that with timely action and adequate investment, Hohoe Metropolis will become a major driver of inclusive development in the Volta Region.
