Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has expressed concern over the Mahama-led administration’s failure to appoint a substantive Minister of Defence following the sudden demise of Dr Omane Boamah.
In a post shared on January 14, 2026, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah noted that it has been five months since the former Minister of Defence passed away, stressing that the country urgently needs a substantive minister to steer the affairs of national security.
According to him, reports of jihadist activities in neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger pose a serious threat to Ghana’s security.
He therefore called for urgent attention to be directed at addressing the situation along the country’s northern borders to prevent any escalation.

“In light of these challenges, I advise President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise Ghana’s security with unwavering resolve.
The threats from Islamic jihadists are real and imminent, requiring robust countermeasures, including strengthened border controls, community engagement in vulnerable areas and enhanced intelligence cooperation with regional partners.
“Furthermore, the vacancy in the Ministry of Defence since the unfortunate passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah in August 2025 cannot persist. I call on the President to make an immediate appointment of a substantive Minister of Defence to provide focused leadership and coordination in safeguarding our nation,” he said.
Palgrave also shared his views on calls by some Ghanaians and prominent individuals for President John Mahama’s term to be extended.

According to him, Parliament should consider debating the matter.
“I urge Parliament to approach these discussions with dispassion, setting aside partisan politics and prioritising the collective interest of Ghana’s growth and development.
“A non-political, inclusive debate will enable us to fortify our democratic framework, enhance efficiency, and position Ghana for sustainable prosperity in the 21st century,” he added.
