Police in search of herdsman linked to Kasoa election day shooting

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a cattle herdsman alleged to have sold a pump-action gun for GH₵4,000 to Mujaheed Suraj, the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting at the Odupongkpehe Zongo voting centre in Kasoa during the 2024 elections.

According to a statement issued by the Central East Regional Police Command, Mujaheed Suraj, who was arrested on January 17, 2026, confessed to committing the crime and claimed ownership of the pump-action gun used in the incident.

However, police say the suspect was unable to produce any documentation covering the firearm, stating instead that he purchased it in 2024 from a cattle herdsman at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region for GH₵4,000.

The arrested suspect on December 7, 2024, discharged a firearm at the Odupongkpehe Zongo voting centre in Kasoa leading to the injury of two victims- Bukari Inusah aged 34 and Tanimu Adamu Tanko, 44.

A stationary pickup truck with registration GT 9550- P also suffered some damages as a result of the action.

The two victims were rushed to the Kasoa Polyclinic for treatment by police.

The police statement issued on Friday January 23, 2026, further announced that the victims are yet to recover fully.
