Coach Jose Riveiro of Orlando Pirates acknowledges that he is unfamiliar with Djabal Club, whom they will face in the CAF Champions League preliminary round on Saturday.

Pirates, who totally missed the playing in Africa competition the previous season, were not exempt from the first round, unlike league champion Mamelodi Sundowns.

After losing on penalties against Moroccan team RS Berkane in the CAF Confederation Cup final during the 2021/22 season, they finished sixth in the DStv Premiership that year.

Riveiro Discusses Potential Changes Despite Not Knowing About Djabal in CCL

Pirates, who finished second last season, are back in the Champions League, but Riveiro, who will be participating in his first CAF club game on Saturday (14:30), says he knows little about the Comoros team they will face there.

Not much, Riveiro quickly remarked after being hesitant to bring up the game.

Although the Pirates coach knows little about Djabal, this team is not unfamiliar to the Pirates.

In the 2013 Champions League, Pirates destroyed Djabal, winning 9-0 on aggregate and in the first round.

The Soweto giants used that to launch their season and advanced all the way to the championship game before falling to Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 on the season’s total score.

Pirates will have played eight games by the end of the month, which will put the Soweto giants squad’s depth to the test. On August 25, Orlando Stadium will host the second leg.

If some players are going to be left behind and allow others a chance, how will Riveiro handle this game? “We have the opportunity to refresh the squad, the starting eleven,” he responded.

Therefore, we must deliberate and choose how much work to perform. As I have often stated, we don’t believe in rotation as a tactic; rather, we feel that rotation should only be performed when it is necessary for the athlete.

There will undoubtedly be many tweaks and we’ll play a different kind of game in a different kind of setting.

The 2019–20 season was Pirates’ most recent appearance in the Champions League, and they lost to Nigerian team Green Eagles in the first round.
