The EC assures temporary staff payments will be paid on or before Friday, June 20 The EC assures temporary staff payments will be paid on or before Friday, June 20

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that temporary staff who worked during the 2024 general elections will receive their allowances by June 20, 2025.

This announcement comes after a prolonged delay of seven months, bringing relief to the affected staff.

In a letter addressed to the temporary staff on June 12, the EC assured that payments would be made on or before Friday, June 20.

Earlier reports on June 12 highlighted mounting public complaints and protests from unpaid staff, with some expressing their frustrations on live radio.

The commission has now confirmed that it has received funds from the Ministry of Finance to facilitate these payments.

“I bring you greetings from the Electoral Commission and trust that this letter finds you well. We are pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Finance has today, Thursday, June 12, 2025, released funds for the payment of temporary staff,” stated the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

According to Jean Mensa, the commission is working diligently to ensure prompt payment to the temporary staff.

She added that they can expect to receive their allowances by June 20, 2025.

The expected disbursement aims to bring closure to the prolonged delay and offer a much-needed boost to the affected individuals.

“The Commission is working around the clock to ensure that payments are made promptly. Temporary staff should expect to receive their allowances on or before Friday, June 20, 2025. We thank you for your patience and cooperation,” stated the letter, signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa.

The EC has reiterated its commitment to processing payments promptly.

In her letter, Mensa expressed gratitude for the staff’s patience and cooperation throughout this period.

Interior Minister Charges Immigration Recruits to Uphold National Integrity

0

Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has called on newly graduated recruits of the Ghana Immigration Service to serve the country with integrity, professionalism, and discipline as they transition into active duty.

The minister made this appeal during the Passing-Out Parade held at the Immigration Service Training School at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.

YEA, Zoomlion contract will not be renewed- President Mahama

0

Accra, June 13, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama says the contract between Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited (“Zoomlion”) has expired and will not be renewed.

He said all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract’s expiration will be thoroughly audited.

The President said in a response letter: “Re: Petition to discontinue the expired contract between the YEA and Zoomlion Ghana Limited” to Mr. Manasseh Azure Awuni, a Freelance Investigative Journalist signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.

Mr Awuni formally petitioned President Mahama to discontinue the 19-year-old contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Under the last contract, which expired in September 2024, GH₵ 850 is allocated to each sweeper. He alleged that Zoomlion keeps GH₵600 and pays the sweepers GH₵250 a month, according to the contract.

He also alleged that Zoomlion charged interest if the YEA delayed in paying the company for three months. In 2024, Zoomlion charged an interest of GHS90 million.

The company delayed paying the sweepers for up to one year and did not have to show that it borrowed money to prefinance the contract, for which reason it charged the GHS 90 million interest.

The President said no further payments would be authorised without proper verification, and any unauthorised payments will be recovered.

He said the Cabinet had directed that future sanitation contracts be subjected to a competitive procurement process. “Rather than one national contract, there should be regional or district-based tenders for private firms,” he said.

He said this could reduce costs through competitive pricing and stimulate innovation, as companies compete on service quality to secure contracts.

“A cabinet subcommittee will develop the modalities for implementing this,” he added.

The President said with probable cost savings, the government intended to increase the sweeper fees to a more “liveable” income.

He said contracts that had not been performed satisfactorily would be reviewed and, where appropriate, terminated in accordance with their terms and upon the advice of the Attorney-General.

IMF to assess cedi’s appreciation in upcoming programme reviews

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will examine the recent currency gains during future reviews of the country’s economic reform agenda under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

The cedi has posted notable appreciation against major foreign currencies in recent weeks, reversing a trend of persistent depreciation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Washington, IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack stated that the Fund is closely tracking all key macroeconomic indicators, including exchange rate movements, to ensure that Ghana’s economic targets remain on course.

“As we look at the programme, we assess all developments including the exchange rate. Future programme reviews will allow our teams to carefully evaluate the evolving macroeconomic and financial conditions and confirm whether the programme’s targets remain appropriate and achievable,” Kozack said.

The strengthening of the cedi comes amid renewed investor confidence and improved foreign exchange inflows, but market analysts say sustained gains will depend on continued fiscal discipline and robust reforms under the IMF-supported programme.

The Chief Executive Officer of Caveman Watches, Anthony Dzamefe, has emphasised the critical role of corporate investment in Africa’s creative arts, stating that such support empowers authentic storytelling and helps shape the continent’s cultural narrative.

Speaking during the announcement of a new partnership between Caveman Watches and the Africa Arts Network to co-present Honey Moon Hotel, a forthcoming stage play by award-winning filmmaker Shirley Frimpong Manso, Mr Dzamefe said the private sector must do more to support African creatives.

“Time tells stories, and stories define our identity. Caveman is proud to stand behind an initiative that reflects the richness of African experiences. This partnership is more than sponsorship, it’s cultural advocacy,” he noted.

Mr Dzamefe called on other corporate organisations to follow suit, especially at a time when public and private investment in the arts has been inconsistent.

The Africa Arts Network, a platform that champions African storytelling through theatre and performance, commended the collaboration. Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, spokesperson for the Network, praised Caveman’s commitment to homegrown talent.

“Caveman Watches is a brand that understands the rhythm of our culture and the value of our stories. This is what authentic partnership looks like,” she said.

The centrepiece of the partnership is the stage play Honey Moon Hotel, written and directed by Shirley Frimpong Manso. The romantic comedy, set entirely in a hotel suite, will premiere this July at the National Theatre in Accra.

The play explores themes of love, betrayal, identity, and vulnerability—hallmarks of Frimpong Manso’s widely acclaimed storytelling style. Honey Moon Hotel marks her return to the live stage, and anticipation is already high among theatre enthusiasts.

Featuring a cast of celebrated Ghanaian actors, the play promises to deliver an emotionally layered performance that blends the immersive charm of theatre with cinematic intensity.

The production is expected to contribute to the growing conversation about the importance of the arts in Ghana’s cultural and economic development.

Where Was Your Sense of Justice and Fairness When Wontumi Was Attacking President, John Dramani Mahama? – Precious Agbenya to the NPP Leadership

In a politically charged atmosphere where calls for decorum and mutual respect are often echoed but rarely practiced, political activist Precious Agbenya has raised a pertinent question that challenges the moral compass of Ghana’s political leadership, particularly that of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a statement that has sparked widespread debate, Agbenya asked, “Where was your sense of justice and fairness when Wontumi was relentlessly attacking our now President, John Dramani Mahama?”

The question strikes at the heart of political accountability and consistency. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, has been a vocal and sometimes controversial figure within Ghanaian politics. His public attacks on former President John Dramani Mahama — who has now reclaimed leadership of the nation — were often scathing, personal, and relentless.

Precious Agbenya’s remarks come at a time when the NPP leadership has been quick to call for civility, especially in the face of criticisms and counter-narratives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political actors. Yet, Agbenya questions this apparent shift in tone, drawing attention to what many see as a glaring double standard.

“When Mahama was being insulted, vilified, and misrepresented in the media, the NPP leadership stood by and, in some cases, even amplified those voices,” Agbenya stated. “Now that the tables have turned, you cry for fairness?”

This call-out is not just a political jab, it is a commentary on the broader issue of hypocrisy in Ghanaian politics. Many citizens have grown weary of leaders who demand respect only when they are on the receiving end of criticism but fail to uphold those same standards when their allies are the aggressors.

Below is his outrage in a long text he wrote:

“ To the NPP Leadership,

Where was your sense of justice and fairness when Wontumi was relentlessly attacking our now President, John Dramani Mahama? Were you blind and deaf then?

You sat in silence because the attacks served your interests. Now that the tables have turned, you suddenly want to come and apologize—for what, exactly?

Dr. Afriyie, where were you and your so-called leadership when Wontumi was dragging the name of the NDC flagbearer—now President Mahama—through the mud? Did you ever think of calling him to order?

Would you have found the “common sense” to apologize if the election had gone your way? Let’s be serious as human beings. Let’s do what is right—not only when it suits us.

‘Precious Emperor Blade’ ”

Political leaders are expected to set the tone for national discourse, especially during elections and leadership transitions. Agbenya’s criticism implies a failure on the part of the NPP leadership to rein in some of its more extreme voices when it mattered most.

The question now is whether Ghanaian political parties are willing to apply their standards uniformly not only when they benefit politically but also when they are required to show humility, introspection, and fairness.

Ghanafest Alberta 2025 set for July 25–27 in Canada

0

Ghana’s rich cultural heritage is set to take centre stage in Canada this July as Ghanafest Alberta returns from July 25 to 27 in Edmonton.

The three-day event was officially launched at a press conference held on June 11, 2025, in Accra, Ghana. Organisers and key stakeholders say this year’s celebration promises to be the biggest yet, bringing together the Ghanaian diaspora, Canadians, and culture lovers from across North America for an immersive experience of Ghanaian music, food, dance, fashion, and business networking.

The festival will showcase traditional and contemporary Ghanaian culture, offering guests the chance to enjoy authentic Ghanaian cuisine, shop unique crafts and fashion, and enjoy performances from top Ghanaian artists and dancers.

“Ghanafest isn’t just a festival. It’s a vibe. It’s family. It’s a chance to be proud of who we are and where we come from,” a representative of Ghanafest Alberta said.

“Every year we come together to share our music, our food, our story with all of Canada. This year, we are dreaming even bigger… You are already a part of it.”

CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, encouraged Ghanaian vendors and participants to take advantage of the event to build long-lasting business relationships and enhance the global appeal of Ghanaian products.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, he explained that “We want you to establish very good networks… not just to promote your products, but to forge meaningful partnerships,” she said.

“We have good products, but we often lack proper packaging. Your packaging is everything. It sells you. It should be attractive enough to compete on the international market.”

The event is led by Araba, founder and organiser of Ghanafest Alberta, whose efforts were praised by Dr. Erieka Bennett, Head of Mission at the Diaspora Africa Forum.

“She’s the kind of diaspora we want more of,” Dr. Bennett noted. “She is highlighting her country by creating a platform that unites Ghanaians abroad and projects Ghana positively to the world. Ghanafest in Canada is a clear example of what public-private partnerships can achieve.”

Professor Robert Ebo Hinson emphasises the vitality of strategic marketing in agribusiness Professor Robert Ebo Hinson emphasises the vitality of strategic marketing in agribusiness

Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Robert Ebo Hinson, has emphasised the importance of strategic marketing in agribusiness.

He urged participants to be intentional in applying marketing principles to drive wealth creation.

According to citinewsroom.com, during the Citi Business Festival session on X Space, June 12, 2025, he explained that many agribusiness ventures struggle or fail due to the neglect of key marketing and branding fundamentals.

“Branding matters at every stage of the value chain”, he stressed.

Professor Hinson’s remark explains the need for agribusinesses to adopt a strategic approach to marketing, one that considers the entire value chain, from production to consumption.

By doing so, agribusinesses can unlock new opportunities, increase competitiveness, and ultimately drive wealth creation.

He stated that effective marketing strategies can also help agribusinesses to better navigate the complexities of the market, respond to changing consumer demands, and stay ahead of the competition.

Senegalese referees appointed for Bayern vs Auckland City game at Club World Cup

Issa Sy will serve as a central referee at the Club World Cup Issa Sy will serve as a central referee at the Club World Cup

FIFA have appointed an all-Senegalese officiating team to handle the opening Group C clash between Bayern Munich and Auckland City at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The match is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Issa Sy will serve as the central referee, with Djibril Camara and Nouha Bangoura running the lines.

The experienced trio from Senegal will be tasked with overseeing a match that promises to be a major test of willpower, pride, and pedigree.

The fixture pits European royalty against Oceania’s perennial champions in what many seem as a David-versus-Goliath encounter.

Bayern Munich, winners of multiple UEFA Champions League and Bundesliga titles, enter the revamped Club World Cup as one of the clear favourites.

On the opposite end, Auckland City, the pride of New Zealand, arrive in the US as determined underdogs.

The Navy Blues, reigning OFC Champions League winners, are composed largely of part-time players.

Placed in a daunting group alongside Bayern, Portuguese giants Benfica, and Argentine heavyweights Boca Juniors, Auckland City face a mammoth task to make any significant impact.

But their spirit, coupled with the unpredictability of tournament football, means the opening match won’t be taken lightly, even by a club as powerful as Bayern.

The appointment of the Senegalese refereeing crew underscores FIFA’s commitment to global representation at the tournament, offering elite officials from across all confederations the chance to shine on the world stage.

Stop airing pirated content or face the law – Copyright Office warns TV stations

0

The Copyright Office of Ghana has warned television stations nationwide to desist from broadcasting copyrighted content without proper authorization, cautioning that offenders will face legal sanctions, including possible jail terms.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 11, the Office’s National Anti-Piracy Committee said it had identified several TV stations engaged in the illegal practice of downloading and airing movies, series, sports broadcasts, and other creative works from streaming platforms without the required licenses.

“This practice constitutes copyright infringement and is a criminal offense under the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), as amended,” the statement emphasized.

It added: “Any individual or entity found in violation is liable to face severe legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, or both.”

The Committee noted that the rampant abuse of intellectual property undermines Ghana’s creative economy, deprives artists and rights holders of their due earnings, and violates both national and international copyright laws.

All broadcasters have been directed to immediately:

  • Cease broadcasting any content they do not hold rights to;

  • Acquire proper licenses from rights holders or authorised agencies;

  • Keep detailed records of all content agreements for inspection.

The Office has announced intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts across the country in partnership with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on such infringements.

“We call on all broadcasters to uphold the principles of intellectual property rights and support the growth of Ghana’s creative economy by respecting the law,” the statement concluded.

Fuel levy postponement eases pressure on OMCs

0

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says that the revised implementation date for the GHS 1 fuel levy on June 16, 2025, will give oil marketing companies (OMCs) enough time to prepare for a full rollout.

Originally, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had scheduled the levy to take effect on June 9. However, following objections raised by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), which cited short notice and inadequate communication, the implementation date was revised to accommodate industry concerns.

Speaking at the 2025 Safety Week Celebration organised by COMAC, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Edudzi Tameklo, acknowledged the Chamber’s proactive engagement, which he described as key to ensuring smooth policy execution.

“Parliament authorised this on June 3, and it has since received presidential assent. Initially, the industry was up in arms. We understand the need for revenue and have provided justifications.

“However, when the industry reached out and clearly indicated that the proposed framework would pose additional financial burdens, we saw wisdom in their concerns and quickly acted to resolve the issue,” he said.

“Thanks be to God, we were able to reach a consensus. Today, I can say to the glory of God that COMAC members can now prepare adequately and stabilise their financial operations,” he added.

The postponement is seen as a significant step in promoting collaboration between regulators and stakeholders in Ghana’s petroleum sector.

‘Many Christians are suffering in their marriages’ – Selina Boateng

0

Selina Boateng is a gospel artiste Selina Boateng is a gospel artiste

Award-winning gospel artiste Selina Boateng has shed light on the unspoken challenges many Christian couples face in their marriages, particularly those involved in ministry.

In an interview with Onua FM on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Boateng revealed that numerous Christian couples remain in unhappy marriages due to fear of societal judgment and stigma within the church.

She explained that these couples often feel compelled to maintain a perfect image despite enduring personal struggles.

“If people felt free to leave their marriages without backlash, divorce rates would skyrocket. The reality would be shocking,” she stated.

“Once you’re married, you can’t openly discuss your hardships. Even those who encouraged the marriage won’t be there to support you,” she added.

The Alpha and Omega singer emphasised that marital problems affect not only personal well-being but also spiritual growth and ministry effectiveness.

“A broken marriage impacts everything, your peace, your ministry, and your purpose, especially for gospel musicians,” she noted.

Boateng called for greater empathy within religious communities, pointing out that women who speak up about their marital issues are often doubted or blamed.

She further stated that many Christian leaders would admit, if they were honest, to marrying the wrong person.

“So much happens behind closed doors. If people spoke freely, you’d be stunned by how many pastors and gospel artistes regret their marital choices,” she revealed.

Reflecting on her own journey, Boateng admitted that her marriage has had its share of difficulties.

If given another chance, she noted, she will make different decisions.

She advised singles to be more discerning in their choices saying, “don’t rush into marriage because of pressure. Take your time and choose wisely.”

Disregard court ruling claiming Nii Adama Latse II is Ga Mantse — Office of Ga Mantse clarifies

0

A photo collage of Nii Adama Latse II and Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II A photo collage of Nii Adama Latse II and Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II

The Office of the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has dismissed claims that the Court of Appeal in Kumasi has declared Nii Adama Latse II as the Ga Mantse.

In a press statement dated June 13, 2025, it described the reports, which have been widely circulated on social media, as false, misleading, and legally unfounded.

“We wish to state unequivocally that this assertion is false, misleading, and legally unfounded. Legal experts have affirmed that, under Ghanaian law, the Courts have no jurisdiction to determine causes or matters affecting chieftaincy, as such matters fall exclusively within the purview of the Judicial

Committees of the Traditional Councils, Regional and National Houses of Chiefs.

“It is, therefore, legally inaccurate to claim that the Court of Appeal, Kumasi, has declared Nil Adama Latse II as Ga Mantse,” it noted.

The Office of the Ga Mantse further clarified that the Court of Appeal did not rule on the chieftaincy status of Nii Adama Latse II but rather affirmed an earlier High Court decision ordering the National House of Chiefs to restore his name to the National Register of Chiefs — an administrative matter, not a ruling on legitimacy.

“The Court of Appeal merely affirmed the High Court’s earlier order of mandamus compelling the National House of Chiefs to restore the name into the National Register of Chiefs within 14 days. This was because it insisted that the removal must be done accordingly to law,” the statement noted.

It also reminded the public that a substantive case regarding the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse Stool is still pending before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in Dodowa.

“It is important to inform the general public that a chieftaincy dispute concerning the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse Stool is currently pending before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at Dodowa. It was initiated by Nii Adama Latse II (as Petitioner) against King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II (referred to as Dr Kelvin Tackie, along with Nii Agyemang Kesse II, Dr. Nii Tetteh Kwei, and Nii Dodoo Nsaki II (as Respondents), under Suit No. GARHC/P2/2019”, it indicated.

It reaffirmed that only the Judicial Committee can determine the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse Stool, adding that until a final ruling is made, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II remains the lawful and recognized Ga Mantse.

It further clarified that King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II was not a party in the Court of Appeal ruling issued on June 12, 2025. The parties involved were Nii Adama Latse II, the National House of Chiefs, and Nii Tetteh Ashong, the Ga Paramount Stool Seitse.

“We reiterate that the only body competent to determine the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse Stool is the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, and that determination is still pending. Until such a decision is made, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II remains the legitimate and recognized Ga Mantse”, it added.

The Office of the Ga Mantse urged the media to disregard the misleading narratives being circulated, urging all well-meaning GaDangme citizens and residents of the Ga State to remain calm and not allow themselves to be swayed by misinformation.

“We call on the general public and the media to disregard the misleading interpretations being propagated by supporters of Nii Adama Latse II. We urge all well-meaning GaDangme citizens and residents of the Ga State to remain calm and not be swayed by misinformation,” it added.

OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL

ACCRA

June 13, 2025.

PRESS BRIEFING BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL ON THE OPERATION RECOVER ALL LOOT (ORAL) INVESTIGATION INTO THE FINANCIAL MALFEASANCE AT THE NATIONAL SERVICE AUTHORITY (NSA)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media, My Fellow countrymen and women

The National Service Program was first established under the National Service Scheme Degree, 1973 (NRCD 208) to provide the basis for our citizens to undertake national service upon meeting specified criteria. The program is currently regulated under the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119). According to the Memorandum accompanying the Bill prior to its enactment, besides the object of mobilizing and posting persons qualified to undertake national service in areas of national priority for the development of our beloved country, the National Service Authority has a statutory obligation to “inculcate the values of civic responsibility, discipline, patriotism, national cohesion and voluntarism in persons qualified to undertake national service..”. Far from inculcating these values into the young men and women qualified and deployed to undertake national service, the criminal enterprise that we have investigated for the four (4) months undermines and makes nonsense of these core values of citizenship.

My Fellow countrymen and women

You may recall that as part of the Operation-Recover-All-Loot (ORAL) agenda of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, a comprehensive report on acts of malfeasance, looting of state resources and corruption by public officers was compiled and submitted to my Office in February this year. I was tasked by the President to thoroughly investigate the allegations contained in the ORAL Report and to prosecute any persons found to have engaged in any act of criminality involving the looting of state resources and or deliberately or recklessly causing the state to lose such resources. The now famous National Service Scandal, which was first uncovered by the Fourth Estate through its investigative journalism, formed a major plank of the ORAL Report. My Office is extremely grateful to the Fourth Estate for the excellent foundational work that they did.

In my last press briefing held on March 24, 2025, I made clear that investigations into the National Service Scandal were almost concluded and that I would return with a detailed update on the investigations and the decision of my Office regarding criminal charges against all persons suspected to have been involved in the looting of state resources. I am here today, my fellow countrymen and women, to announce that I have received the dockets compiled by diligent and hardworking investigators at the National Intelligence Bureau. The dockets were compiled under close supervision by my Office led by the Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem Sai.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media

In or around February 2022, the management of the National Service Authority announced the introduction of a digitalization system which they claimed had saved the country some One Hundred and Twelve Million Ghana Cedis (Ghs 112m). Through an app known as the Metric App which allegedly combines facial recognition technology and identity card checks for verification and validation, the NSA had blocked the enrolment of some Fourteen Thousand and Twenty-Seven (14,027) potential fraudsters on to the scheme for the 2021-2022 service year. Despite these claims, when our current Minister of Finance, the Honourable Cassiel Ato Forson, ordered a head count of all national service personnel as a precondition for the disbursement of arears of allowances payable to the personnel dating back to August 2024, it was discovered that around Eighty-One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty-Five (81,885) were ghost names.

Our investigations have revealed a sprawling criminal enterprise whose network covers the entire country. This criminal enterprise was run by top-level executives of the NSA and their accomplices in the private sector known as vendors or service providers. This criminal enterprise resulted in the siphoning of huge sums of public funds into private pockets. In total, we can confirm that a whopping Five Hundred and Forty-Eight Million Three Hundred and Thirty-Three Thousand Five Hundred and Forty-Two Ghana Cedis (Ghs 548,333,542.65) has been lost to the state through this criminal enterprise. The breakdown is as follows:

Service Year Amount Lost to NSP Ghost Names
2018/2019 Ghs 25,857,836.16
2019/2020 Ghs 21,613,962.24
2020/2021 Ghs 55,670,584.32
2021/2022 Ghs 61,383,025.74
2022/2023 Ghs 350,926,977.12
2023/2024 Ghs 32,881,157.07
6 Service Yrs Ghs 548,333,542.65

The criminal enterprise that resulted in the loss of this colossal sum of money to the state involved the creation of ghost names within the NSA payroll system by some directors and staff which they subsequently exploited to misappropriate state funds for their personal gain. This they did in direct collaboration with vendors and other accomplices.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media

Our investigations revealed that, prior to the commencement of each new service year, the directors would submit to Parliament for approval a budget figure representing the number of prospective service personnel for that service year. Consistently, these figures were inflated by huge numbers. During the fiscal year, the directors would write to the Minister of Finance requesting permission to utilize excess funds allocated in the budget of the NSA. Once authorized, the directors would transfer the funds into the NSA’s project account at the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and under the pretext of executing their projects, would divert the funds into private pockets.

Another criminal scheme hatched and exploited by the directors and staff is the deployment of ghost names on to the NSA system. Once deployed, the directors would then request that both ghost names and genuine names be transmitted by the Head of Accounts to the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GHIPSS) for payment. These payments included payments to E-Zwich cards procured for the fictitious national service personnel. Our investigations compared monthly data of verified national service personnel generated from the central management system and submitted to the NSA accounts office and the data of NSA personnel who were actually paid through the GHIPSS system for a period of six years (2018-2024). It was established that a total of Five Hundred and Eighty-Seven Thousand Five Hundred and Forty-Three (587,543) personnel were to be submitted to GHIPSS for payment of allowances. Meanwhile, data from GHIPSS showed that a total of Six Hundred and Fifty Thousand One Hundred and Sixty-Five (650,165) personnel were paid, indicating that Sixty-Three Thousand Six Hundred and Seventy-Two (63,672) constituted ghost names. These consisted of the following categories of personnel:

  • NSPS who were blocked on the CMS during the registration process;
  • NSP numbers that exist in the payment records but do not exist on the CMS;
  • NSA volunteers;
  • NSA management/staff and market place vendors.

My Fellow countrymen and women

Our investigations additionally established that some of the ghost names were added to the lists submitted by the vendors, representing the number of service personnel to whom they had supplied items or provided loan facilities. When these vendors eventually received payments, the directors and staff would then  contact the vendors whose accounts had received payments, meet with them, and collect the additional money that had been added to the vendors’ payments. For instance, we have conclusively established that, after collecting these funds, some of the suspects, such as Gaisie, Nyarko, and Oteng handed them over to suspect Osei Assibey Antwi in cash and on some occasions deposited the cash into his bank account.

Some directors, such as Gifty Oware-Mensah, created and executed a meticulously detailed plan, using NSP allowances as security to obtain a loan of thirty million six hundred and ninety-eight thousand, two hundred and eighteen cedis, sixty-nine pesewas (GH¢30,698,218.69) from the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) at an interest rate of twenty-three percent (23%). She achieved these results by using other people’s information to register a company called Blocks of Life Consult without their knowledge or permission. Subsequently, she presented “BLOCKS OF LIFE CONSULT” through a middleman in the person of Maxwell Akwesi Ofori-Mintah to an official of the Agricultural Development Bank, enlisting her husband, Peter Mensah, a lawyer, to act as one of the directors/ representatives of the said company. She told ADB that the company specialised in supplying home appliances to National Service personnel and proposed that ADB finance the company to enable it to supply these items on hire purchase to the service personnel, with the NSA being responsible for handling the deductions and repayments. During that period, suspect Gifty was the acting director of the Authority. However, on the marketplace of the Authority, there was no indication that “BLOCKS OF LIFE CONSULT” was a registered vendor.

Within two service years (2022-2023 and 2023- 2024), suspect Gifty Oware-Mensah used a total of nine thousand, nine hundred and thirty-four (9,934) ghost names to misappropriate the aforementioned funds. Investigation further established that, after ADB transferred the funds into the account of the company, she subsequently transferred the funds into four different company accounts with the names as follows: AMEACOM, Scafold, OTCHEY, and Aristo Logistics and Trading. It was further established that suspect Gifty is a director of AMAECOM and Scaffold Company Limited belongs to suspect Abraham Gaisie. That, between 3rd  March 2023 and 24th May 2024, suspect Gifty transferred twenty-two million nine hundred and twenty-five thousand, five hundred and eighteen Ghana cedis and sixty-nine pesewas (Ghc 22,925,518.69) to AMAECOM, one million Ghana Cedis (GH¢1,000,000.00) to Scafold, one million, five hundred and seventy-two thousand seven hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢1,572,700.00) to OTCHEY, and five million, two hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢5,200,000.00) to Aristo Logistics and Trading.

Investigation however established that Eric NYARKO (from 2017 until April 2024,) and Iddrisu IBN ABU-BAKR (April 2024 to December 2024) were responsible for preparing and transmitting NSP payroll data to GHIPPS for payment of allowances with the approval of the former NSA Director-Generals; Mustapha YUSSIF (2017- February 2021), Gifty Oware ABOAGYE (acting February, 2021-September, 2021) and Osei Assibey ANTWI (September, 2021 to January, 2025). Without their explicit authority nothing was possible. Furthermore, investigation revealed that national service volunteers received payments from funds intended for NSP allowances between 2018 and 2024.

In the 2022/2023 service year, a total of eight million, two hundred and fifty-six thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢8,256,000.00) was deposited into EZWICH account number 1177042059, which is registered in the name of suspect Osei Assibey. Investigations showed that he personally received these funds. During a search at his residence, the aforementioned Ezwich card was found.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media:

Investigation further revealed that another suspect, Haruna Mawulaya of Al-Fayda Ventures, a vendor, received a total payment of GH¢21,306,272.43 into his account from 2017 to 2024. Suspect Rose Hamilton, of Marine Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢50,754,923.15 into her account from 2017 to 2024. Suspect Isaac Asamani, of Option Buy Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢11,458,686.90 into his account from 2017 to 2024,

A total payment of GH¢167,554,398.54 was made into the account from of a savings and loan entity between 2019 and 2024. Suspect Sylvia Ntriwa Opare, of Sylsona Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢10,746,634.41 into her account from 2021 to 2024. Suspect Jacob Yawson, of Nyansapo Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢19,199,638.57 into his account from 2021 to 2024. suspects Philomina Arthur and Stephen Kwabena Gyamfi, of brainwave Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢17,646,523.80 into their account from 2021 to 2024. Suspect Solomon Dwamena, of Alfarita Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢8,236,019.67 into his account from 2021 to 2024. Suspect Charles Ohemeng, of CH OHEC Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢14,235,118.14 into his account from 2022 to 2024. Suspects Kwaku Opare Agbofa and Prince Agbofa Awuku, of Fralisa Ventures, received a total payment of GH¢9,011,164.35 into their accounts from 2023 to 2024. However, none of the aforementioned vendors provided evidence to prove that the amounts of money they received corresponded to the items supplied or loans supposedly made to National Service Personnel.

Parliament summons EC Chair over Ablekuma North election result

0

Parliament has summoned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, to appear before the House next week regarding the unresolved Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

The announcement was made by the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, during the presentation of the Business Statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13.

According to Mr. Ayariga, Mrs. Mensa is expected to appear before a Committee of the Whole to respond to two key questions related to the electoral standoff in the constituency.

“The Electoral Commission will be asked two questions, so the EC Chair will appear before the Committee of the Whole to answer them,” he stated.

In addition, the Ministers for the Interior, and Works and Housing and Water Resources, are scheduled to brief the House on Wednesday, June 18, on the recent flooding incidents across the country and measures being taken to mitigate them.

The declaration of results in the Ablekuma North parliamentary race has been stalled due to incomplete results from three out of 281 polling stations. This has sparked fierce disputes between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), both of whom are claiming victory.

Tensions peaked on January 8, 2025, when the Returning Officer resigned following disagreements over pink sheet discrepancies. Since then, the EC has suspended the process seven times amid escalating confrontations between supporters of both parties.

Meanwhile, both the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and the NPP’s Akua Afriyie have erected ‘thank you’ billboards, each asserting a win.

Kowa Naso and D-Wise XI booked their places in the final after dramatic semi-final victories. Kowa Naso edged past Field Masters 2-1, while D-Wise XI triumphed 6-5 on penalties against Sporting Club.

Public Relations Officer for the Thomas Partey Tournament, Samuel Ziga, expressed his satisfaction with how the event unfolded.

“It’s been massive— a significant improvement on what we experienced last year,” Ziga said.

“We had the main man himself, Thomas Partey, present. Everyone was thrilled to have him here for this special occasion. This is only the second edition, and I must say, it’s already impressive.
I love how Ghanaians continue to support Thomas Partey.

“This project is dear to his heart — he wants to give back to mother Ghana, and this tournament is one way of supporting the young players who aspire to become professionals. For the next edition, I’m expecting something even more spectacular.”

Fuel prices to go up in July despite June stability – CEMSE projects

0

CEMSE projects a hike in fuel prices in July 2025 CEMSE projects a hike in fuel prices in July 2025

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah, has projected short-term stability in fuel prices in Ghana, warning, however, of a potential increase starting in July 2025.

According to Nsiah, while fuel prices are expected to remain stable and even decline slightly in mid-June, the relief will be temporary.

Market projections indicate that diesel prices could rise by over 6% beginning with the first pricing window of July 2025.

The anticipated surge is attributed to rising global oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East, which could impact export prices from late July through August 2025.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business on Friday June 13, 2025, Nsiah stated that fuel prices are projected to decrease by approximately 10% during the second pricing window, which begins on June 16, 2025.

“Based on market trends, fuel prices will remain stable in June, with an expected 10% drop on June 16 during the second pricing window. This should bring prices down by about one Ghana cedi per litre. However, beginning in July, prices will likely rise again based on the projections I’ve reviewed,” he explained.

Commenting on a 12% surge in global oil prices, Nsiah warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East could drive export prices even higher in the coming weeks, which would directly impact local pump prices.

“The situation in the Middle East continues to escalate, and that’s likely to drive up export prices in the coming months. This challenges the government’s claim that there is a global windfall justifying consumer support for the energy sector,” he added.

Nsiah further criticised the government’s approach of using temporary international market trends and cedi appreciation to justify imposing levies on consumers.

He warned that this strategy could backfire by August 2025 if both global oil prices and the cedi’s exchange rate shift unfavorably.

“If the government is relying on falling international prices or the cedi’s appreciation to extract one Ghana cedi per litre from consumers, that’s not sustainable. We are likely to see the flaws in this approach by August, when product prices on the global market rise and the cedi begins to depreciate against the dollar,” he cautioned.

‘Very matured’ – Fans praise Thomas Partey’s calm response to Black Stars captaincy saga

Thomas Partey (L) vice, and Jordan Ayew (R) main, are the captains of the Black Stars Thomas Partey (L) vice, and Jordan Ayew (R) main, are the captains of the Black Stars

Ghana midfielder, Thomas Partey, has earned widespread praises from fans after tactfully addressing rumours of internal tensions in the Black Stars camp over the team’s captaincy.

In an era where controversies often spiral out of control, Partey’s composed and mature approach has struck a chord with many supporters.

During an interview with 3Sports, the Arsenal star was asked about the so-called unrest surrounding the leadership of the national team.

This topic has been the subject of heated speculation on social media and in the traditional press.

But Partey was quick to shut down the noise, denying any internal issues.

“When we switch from one captain to another to the next, it has to be smooth. I don’t know where the fight is coming from. I think it is from the outside.

In the team, we don’t talk about any player and captaincy. The problem is from outside not inside,” Partey said.

Though Partey didn’t lash out or point fingers, his calm and measured response was enough to earn plaudits across social media platforms.

Partey’s approach appears to have cooled the temperature around a debate that was threatening to overshadow Ghana’s preparations ahead of crucial international assignments.

Whether or not he wears the armband, many fans now believe Partey is playing the role of a silent captain, leading not just with his feet, but with wisdom.

De Bruyne Completes Napoli Move After Man City Exit

0

Kevin De Bruyne

KEVIN DE BRUYNE has completed his move to Napoli after the Belgian midfielder left Manchester City at the end of the Premier League season.

De Bruyne will link up with former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who is head coach of the Italian champions.

In moving to Italy on a free transfer, De Bruyne rejected an offer from Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire, and the switch means he can play in the Champions League next season.

Napoli announced the signing of the 33-year-old with a computer-generated image, external of De Bruyne sitting on a throne wearing a crown, captioned “King Kev is here”.

He left Manchester City after 10 years at the club, winning 19 major trophies after joining from Wolfsburg in 2015.

De Bruyne notably helped City to win six Premier League titles, five League Cups and two FA Cups – plus their first Champions League title in 2023, completing the Treble as Pep Guardiola’s team became only the second English side ever to achieve the feat.

His departure from City was announced before the end of the season, and De Bruyne bid an emotional farewell at Etihad Stadium following his final home league match against Bournemouth in May.

He also briefly appeared at Fulham in City’s final game of the domestic season.

“It’s been unbelievable to have the 10 years that I had with everything that happened here. It’s been an unbelievable ride and an absolute pleasure,” De Bruyne said of his City exit.

“It was a joy working really hard to try and help create something that brought the club the success we enjoyed. I’m super proud to have played a part in that.

Interior Minister inaugurates NACOC Governing Council, charges members to lead drug war

0

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has inaugurated the new Governing Council of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), urging members to lead a bold, coordinated, and ethical response to Ghana’s growing drug trafficking and abuse crisis.

Delivering a firm charge to the appointees, the Minister described the threat of illicit narcotics as “a virus eating away at the fabric of society”, calling for immediate and sustained institutional action to combat it.

“The inauguration of this board comes at a time when rigorous efforts are being put in place to combat the virus imposed by illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs. This has become a matter of grave national and international concern,” he said.

Illicit drug trafficking, the Minister noted, has evolved into one of the most destructive threats facing the country, particularly affecting Ghana’s youth.
“Drug trafficking is a transnational organised crime that recognises no borders and has no regard for human life. It increases insecurity, affects our economy, destroys families, and undermines the health and productivity of our citizens.”

The Interior Minister stressed that the gravity of the crisis demands “a logical, consistent, tactical, and sustained institutional response”, emphasizing that NACOC must operate with strategic coordination, intelligence sharing, and strong public engagement.

The newly constituted Council is composed of representatives from various state institutions, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Health, National Intelligence Bureau, civil society, and the private sector. This diversity, the Minister believes, will enrich the Commission’s approach and broaden its reach across communities.

The Minister emphasised the importance of ethical leadership and public accountability in the execution of the Commission’s mandate.

“The policies you formulate, the decisions you make, and the standards you uphold will echo across the sectors and communities that rely on our leadership and service,” he said.
He further urged the Council to balance bold action with humility, adding:

“You have been entrusted with authority, which counts with accountability. Every decision you make must reflect the highest standard of ethical conduct.”
As the Council assumes its new role, the nation watches with high expectations. The fight against narcotic drugs, stakeholders say, will require not only technical know-how, but moral courage, discipline, and relentless coordination.

This revelation has sparked widespread debate, as the video appears to show Major Dartey allegedly pulling a gun on Adoma during an interview years ago.

A report by EDHUB on X, dated June 13, indicated that the US Army panel showed Adoma a segment of the infamous interview, highlighting the incident where Major Dartey allegedly brandished a firearm, an act considered a serious breach of military conduct.

Adoma shared that he had the opportunity to speak with the imprisoned officer, who appeared to be in good spirits and disclosed that he had become a born-again Christian following his ordeal.

He also revealed that Major Dartey’s wife submitted the video footage of her husband allegedly brandishing the weapon to the authorities and had filed a separate complaint accusing him of assault.

According to Adoma, the court-martial panel informed him that his friend and fellow YouTuber, Magraheb TV, was also mentioned in the investigative documents.

Major Kojo Owusu Dartey was sentenced to 70 months in prison in February 2025 for smuggling firearms to Ghana.

Adoma added that his testimony, along with the court-martial panel’s findings, ultimately exonerated Major Dartey of the charges related to the public display of the weapon as a military officer.

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has ruled that Nii Tackie Adama Latse II be added to the records of the National House of Chiefs as Ga Mantse.

The Court of Appeal made the ruling in the hearing of an application which challenged the ruling of the High Court in Kumasi, Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, be reinstated to the records of the House of Chiefs.

The decision of the High Court was challenged in the Court of Appeal in 2021, and an injunction was granted to prevent Nii Adama Latse II from being added to the records by the National House of Chiefs and another party.

The Court of Appeal reportedly dismissed the challenge to the High Court ruling by a unanimous 3-0 decision.

The court also ordered the National House of Chiefs to re-enter Boni King Tackie Adama Latse II’s name in the register within 14 days.

The House of Chiefs and the other plaintiff were fined with costs of GH₵30,000 and GH₵20,000 respectively.

Speaking to the media after the ruling, the lawyer of Nii Latse II said, “The case arose from the expunging of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II from the National Register of Chiefs by the National House of Chiefs. And we took this matter to the High Court as far back as 2021. The High Court gave judgment in our favour and ordered the National House of Chiefs to reinstate me as the Ga Mantse.

“Then the National Security Chiefs and the interested party that happens to be (sic), they appealed and successfully got the stay of execution since 2021,” he said.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has reacted criticisms from the opposition NPP and threats by members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of protest over the newly introduced Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) 2025.

Reacting to the levy of GHc1 on petroleum products, aimed at funding fuel needed to power thermal plants to ensure stable electricity in an interview with Onua TV on June 12, 2025, Asiedu Nketia stated that he would willingly grant their request to go on a protest.

“If I were President Mahama, being a listening government, I would allow the NPP to go on their strike, then I will honour their desire to return to the times of the previous NPP government by reverting the prices of fuel from the current price of GHc12 to the previously GHc17 which was their good old days,” he stated.

He also said that the NPP government always left debt in the sector which ends up affecting Ghanaians in every aspect of life.

Government blocks return of MTN Zone bundle to prevent market monopoly – Sam George explains

Samuel Nartey George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that his Ministry has rejected a proposal by telecom giant MTN to reintroduce its popular “Zone” data bundle.

Speaking during a live X Space discussion hosted by social media influencer KalyJay on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the minister emphasised that while the decision may be unpopular, it is necessary to prevent the collapse of competitors in Ghana’s telecommunication sector.

“MTN wants to bring Zone back, but as a minister, I have said no,” Sam George stated.

“It’s a bitter pill we have to take today, so that we don’t end up with a single-player monopoly that would put the country in a worst situation,”he added.

He explained that MTN’s Zone offer, which allowed the company to drastically underprice data bundles, posed a threat to smaller telecommunication operators.

The minister noted that considering the fact that MTN currently controls nearly 80% of the market share, allowing the return of such aggressive pricing would eliminate fair competition.

“Zone was allowing MTN to undercut the market and price below standard rates. If we reintroduce it now, by the end of the year, the other networks might not survive,” he stated.

In response to public concerns, the minister assured that alternative compensation packages, such as bonus increases and percentage adjustments, are being considered to ease the impact on consumers.

Sam George concluded by reiterating that the government remains committed to creating a balanced and competitive telecommunication landscape in Ghana.

Mahama assures Dagbon/Northern Region of fair share of national cake

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 13, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama on Friday assured the Overlord of Dagbon Ya-Na Abukari II and his Kingdom, as well as the Northern Region of their fair share of the national cake.

He reiterated that the development of Dagbon and the entire Northern Region remains a central priority for his government.

“I wish to reaffirm my commitment to the social and economic transformation of northern Ghana, rooted in partnership with traditional authorities and anchored in direct, practical investment,” President Mahama stated during a courtesy call on him by the Overlord of Dagbon at the Presidency.

The Ya-Na and his routine of paramount chiefs were at the Presidency to congratulate President Mahama on his resounding victory in the December 7, 2024, general election.

The President said in the 2025 Budget Statement, the Government outline specific interventions to accelerate growth, to promote equity, and deepen inclusion in northern Ghana.

Touching on agriculture and food security, the President said under the Northern Savannah Economic Transformation Programme, over 10,000 hectares of irrigated land was to be developed in the Nasia, Dungu, and Bulung programme areas.

This project, he said, was expected to create jobs for over 8,000 young farmers and boost the production of rice, maize, and soya beans.

He said they were targeting three crops, rice, maize, and soya bean; stating that it was designed to turn the Northern Region into a major agro-industrial hub, with Yendi, Savelugu, and Karaga as key agribusiness processing centres.

The President said additionally, they would invest to strengthen the shea and cashew value chains, with expanded processing centres in Tamale and market linkages in Tolon and Zabzugu.

This, he said would benefit thousands of rural women and provide sustainable livelihoods rooted in their traditional knowledge systems.

The President recalled that he launched the National Apprenticeship Programme in Tamale; stating that youth development was at the heart of their national rebirth.

He said the 2025 budget had provided adequate funding for the take-off of the National Apprenticeship Programme, which was being rolled out in partnership with vocational institutions and the private sector across the country.

The President said over 5,000 youths from the Northern Region were expected to be trained in employable skills such as carpentry, welding, tailoring, shea butter processing, and agribusiness.

These efforts, he said, aligned with the Government’s broader vision of the 24-Hour Economy strategy, which would provide new job opportunities and extended business hours across agro-processing logistics and community.

“I look forward to launching a pilot 24-hour economic zone in the Northern Region”.

With regards to health, President Mahama reiterated their commitment to the health sector was equally strong.

He said under the Savannah Health Investment Plan, they were commencing the rehabilitation of the Yendi Municipal Hospital and building two new CHPS compounds (Community-based Health Planning and Services compound) at Nakpache and Kwanjaga.

He said the Government was also deploying 30 additional community nurses across rural Dagbon by December this year, which was linked to their programme policy framework called Mahama Cares, which guarantees access to basic health care for every Ghanaian, irrespective of location or income.

On infrastructure, the President said they were investing in the Northern Roads Improvement Corridor, which includes upgrading the Tamale-Yendi-Tatale Corridor.

He said Feeder Roads connecting San, Gusegwu, Saboba, and Bumbuna would also be improved to enhance mobility for farmers and traders.

He said under the Big Push, they were going to complete the remaining segments of the Eastern Corridor Road project.

“The people of Dagbon have waited long for peace, and so now they deserve progress and development,” he said.

“The time for promises has passed. What we must now deliver is the results. Our people deserve water, roads, schools, clinics, and jobs. The northern region cannot remain a symbol of poverty while being a source of national pride,” he said.

To this end, he said the Community Infrastructure Development Fund, launched in 2025, would finance water and sanitation projects in 50 underserved communities in Dagbon; namely Kpatenga, Lugni, Nakpanduri, while small town water systems were planned for Wulensi and Bimbilla.

He said the Yendi water supply system would also be executed, stating that they had been offered funds by the European Union to execute the Yendi water supply system, as well as the Tamale water expansion project, which includes Damongo, the Savannah Regional Capital.

On his part, Yaa Naa Abukari entreated President Mahama to continue this path of visionary leadership that was prioritizing people-centred policies to ensure that the needs and welfare of Ghanaians remained at the forefront of decision-making.

Joe Ghartey cleared in Sky Train probe – Deputy Attorney General

0

Ghana’s Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, has clarified that former Minister for Railways Development, Hon. Joe Ghartey, is not implicated in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the controversial Accra Sky Train project.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr Srem-Sai stated unequivocally that “former AG and later Railway Minister Joe Ghartey at a point was invited, but he explained his side of the story. When you look at the charge sheet for Sky Train, he’s not on it.”

This revelation comes amidst public interest and speculation surrounding the $2 million payment made in connection with the proposed Sky Train project, which never materialised.

Dr Srem-Sai reiterated that “the fact that you’re a minister at the time doesn’t mean that you will be criminally liable for anything.” He explained that while Ghartey was questioned during preliminary investigations, his actions were not found to warrant prosecution.

It will be recalled that Joe Ghartey, who also previously served as Attorney General, has consistently maintained that the Ministry of Railways Development did not make any financial commitments under his leadership towards the Sky Train project.

The Deputy Attorney General noted that not all investigations result in charges, and emphasised the importance of due process. “Not every minister presiding over a controversial ministry bears criminal responsibility,” he said.

No selective justice

Addressing wider concerns about perceived political bias in ongoing prosecutions, Dr Srem-Sai pointed out that many former appointees under the previous government are being investigated or have been arrested, but without a media spectacle.

“I appreciate the demeanour of a lot of the government appointees. A large number of the persons who have been arrested, now on bail, who are under investigation, are quiet. They will not make any noise about it,” he said.

LatexFoamPromo

He also observed that while a few high-profile cases have attracted media attention, a considerable number of former officials have cooperated with law enforcement quietly.

“It’s only a few who, once in a while, come in the media, and then people are massing up to go to EOCO. But there are a lot of them who go quietly, do what they are asked to do, and leave without any noise at all,” he noted.

President Mahama reiterates Government’s commitment to strengthen chieftaincy institution

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 13, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthen the chieftaincy institution in Ghana.

He said beyond infrastructure, the Government was also restoring the dignity and capacity of the traditional chieftaincy institution.

The President gave the assurance during a courtesy call on him at the Presidency in Accra by the Overlord of Dagbon Yaa Naa Abukari II.

The Yaa Naa and his routine of paramount chiefs were at the Presidency to congratulate President Mahama on his resounding victory in the December 7, 2024, general election.

Yaa Naa Abukari’s visit to the Presidency comes on the heels of a similar visit last week by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu and his entourage of paramount chiefs.

President Mahama in his remarks during the Yaa Naa’s visit said the Traditional Leadership Support Fund, created under the 2025 budget, would finance the preservation of royal archives, rehabilitation of palaces, and logistical support for traditional areas, including the Dagbon Traditional Council.

“We recognize that tradition is complementary to development. Tradition is foundational. This government will not sideline traditional rulers.

We will partner with you. We will listen to your wise counsel. We will honour your place in the national architecture of governance,” he said.

President Mahama acknowledged the Yaa Naa’s wise leadership in promoting peace beyond the boundaries of Dagbon.

He noted that the Yaa Naa’s quiet interventions in disputes across Mampusi, Gonja, and the Eastern Corridor had helped reduce tensions and avoid escalation; saying “and Ghana is grateful to you”.

“I remember your visit to your brother, the Yagbonwura,” President Mahama said.
