ASUU Strike: NANS To Challenge FG Over Alleged N1.2 Trillion ASUU Demands.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will meet with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, in light of rumors that the Federal Government lacks the funds to meet the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

However, the student body has dissociated itself from a report calling for the dismissal of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

Comrade Odiahi Thomas Ikhine, Vice President (Special Duties) of NANS, stated on Monday at a news conference in Abuja that the students were dissatisfied with statements attributed to Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, that the government lacks the funds to meet ASUU’s demands.

Keyamo reportedly asked parents to beg ASUU to call off the strike because the government could not afford the $1.2 trillion in demands proposed by the Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs Committee to renegotiate the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.

The Vice President of NANS, Ikhine, stated that the Association’s leadership would meet with Adamu and Ngige to determine exactly what was happening following President Buhari’s directive that the strike be resolved within two weeks and government officials’ statements that there is insufficient funding to meet the Union’s demands.

He swore that the students would persevere in their efforts to ensure that the correct action was taken.

He further emphasized that NANS was not involved in the alleged report asking for the dismissal of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele.

According to him, some anonymous individuals posing as the leadership of the NANS (Zone D) sought Emefiele’s dismissal for what they termed the debasement of the national economy.

In the meantime, the student body has revealed that the existing leadership of the is in the process of transferring power to the next administration, stating that it has drafted a constitution that would ensure that only genuine students compete for leadership posts.
