While doing Vanity Fair’s lie detector interview recently, Danny DeVito made headlines for saying that he was a better Penguin in a Batman film than Colin Farrell was.
DeVito memorably played the Penguin in Batman Returns, whereas Farrell played the character in the most recent Batman reboot, The Batman.

Also in Vanity Fair’s lie detector interview, Elizabeth Olsen revealed a juicy tidbit about her feelings regarding Danielle Haim. Speaking of Haim’s acting debut in Licorice Pizza, Olsen first said that she was a better actor than Haim (and that she hoped Haim would agree).
Olsen then added, “I loved the film, and I thought she was great in it. But she didn’t have to do much.” The polygraph determined that this was a lie…which led Olsen to uncomfortably proclaim that Danielle’s performance was “fine.”

In an example that’s a bit more extreme, Succession actor Brian Cox once called Johnny Depp “so overblown” and “so overrated.”
He specifically spoke of Depp’s performance in Edward Scissorhands: “I mean, Edward Scissorhands. Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face makeup, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less.”

Cox also shared his thoughts on director Quentin Tarantino: “I find his work meretricious. It’s all surface. Plot mechanics in place of depth. Style where there should be substance. I walked out of Pulp Fiction.”

And he said that actor Steven Seagal (his costar in The Glimmer Man) is “as ludicrous in real life as he appears onscreen,” saying Seagal acts like he’s “on a higher plane to the rest of us.” He continued, “And while he’s certainly on a different plane, no doubt about that, it’s probably not a higher one,” and said that Seagal thinks he’s “far more capable and talented than he actually is.”

Kathy Griffin once similarly said of Jon Hamm, “He’s one of these hot guys who’s mildly funny but actually thinks he’s comedian-level funny.”

Ray Liotta also called a fellow actor overrated. On an episode of Watch What Happens Live, Liotta called Clint Eastwood the most overrated actor of the ’80s and ’90s.

Megan Fox also infamously compared Michael Bay to Adolf Hitler and called him socially awkward: “[Michael] wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he’s a nightmare to work for, but when you get him away from set and he’s not in director mode, I kind of really enjoy his personality because he’s so awkward, so hopelessly awkward. He has no social skills at all.”

While speaking about Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand Goop, Martha Stewart shaded Paltrow’s acting by saying, “She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.”

She also slammed Taylor Schilling’s acting in Orange Is the New Black when asked about the show in comparison with her own prison experience: “They could have done that so much better. That girl is not good enough, the lead actress.”

Joan Crawford and Bette Davis had one of the most famous rivalries in Hollywood history. While most of the comments they made about each other were more petty or had to do with the other’s personality rather than her acting ability, Davis was once quoted as saying, “Miss Crawford is a movie star, and I am an actress.”

The music industry is full of feuds as well. Rapper Meek Mill once accused Drake of using a ghostwriter instead of writing his own raps, then called Drake “way out of it” compared with Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. The two artists exchanged diss tracks for years.

Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses also had a feud way back when. Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain once said, “We’re not your typical Guns N’ Roses type of band that has absolutely nothing to say,” beginning a long story of bad blood between the two bands.

Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne were also pitted against each other early on in Lavigne’s career. After Lavigne made some pretty negative comments about the way Spears dressed and danced, Spears fired back. “Avril doesn’t really dance,” she said. “But whatever. It’s weird. My third album sold as much as her first one, which is very funny to me because everyone thought it didn’t do that great.”

I wouldn’t say Elton John and Madonna ever feuded, but John did once refer to Madonna’s song “Die Another Day” as “the worst Bond tune of all time,” saying “it hasn’t got a tune.”

Madonna doesn’t shy away from criticizing other artists, either. She once called Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” “reductive” in response to fans and critics who pointed out it was similar to her hit “Express Yourself.”

Speaking of Madonna, Jennifer Lopez once called out her acting. “Do I think she’s a great performer? Yeah. Do I think she’s a great actress? No,” J.Lo said.
“Acting is what I do, so I’m harder on people when they say, ‘Oh, I can do that — I can act,'” she continued. “I’m like, ‘Hey, don’t spit on my craft.'”

Lopez also dissed Winona Ryder: “I was never a big fan of hers. In Hollywood she’s revered, she gets nominated for Oscars, but I’ve never heard anyone in the public or among my friends say, ‘Oh, I love her.’ She’s cute and talented, though.”

Kelly Clarkson once seemed to call Miley Cyrus a “pitchy stripper” after her VMAs performance. Though she didn’t refer to Cyrus by name, many thought it was clear who she was referring to.
Clarkson later said that it wasn’t her fault people thought she was talking about Cyrus, and that she “didn’t say any names. … I’m not dragging anyone’s name in the mud. Everybody’s art is their art. I was just simply expressing my artistic point of view.”

Tim Gunn is no fan of the Kardashians’ fashion, despite their appearances on the covers of fashion magazines and their numerous fashion-based businesses. He called their fashion vulgar, making comments like, “If you want guidance for your fashion, just consider this: If a Kardashian is wearing it, don’t,” and “I don’t care what you wear as long as you don’t dress like a Kardashian.”

Gunn also called actor-turned-singer Taylor Momsen a “diva” after appearing as a guest star on her show Gossip Girl. “She was pathetic, she couldn’t remember her lines, and she didn’t even have that many. I thought to myself, Why are we all being held hostage by this brat?“
