Ing Kwabena Agyepong, a presidential aspirant in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming flagbearership primaries, has called on party faithful to unite and “call the bluff” of fellow aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong over what he describes as persistent mudslinging, falsehoods and divisive rhetoric directed at the party and its government.
Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Kwame Adinkra, Ing Agyepong described it as “ridiculous and despicable” for anyone within the NPP to claim they signed important documents without reading them or to trivialise Ghana’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund by suggesting leaders merely “went to sip tea and sign our death warrant.”
“That kind of talk is bad, and he should stop it,” Ing Agyepong said, stressing that such commentary has become a recurring pattern. “This is what he’s been doing all the time, and so he must stop. As a custodian of the party’s history, I will not sit down for him to constantly distort it.”
He accused Kennedy Agyapong of deliberately misrepresenting the record of the Akufo-Addo administration, including claims that the government was “wicked” and had abandoned the grassroots.
According to him, such messaging is calculated to sow resentment within the party’s base and weaken internal cohesion.
Ing Agyepong argued that those claims do not stand up to scrutiny, insisting that Kennedy Agyepong is among the major beneficiaries of the government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He alleged that Kennedy Agyapong received the “lion’s share” of lucrative state opportunities, yet now portrays himself as having been sidelined.
To support his argument, he cited what he described as key appointments linked to Kennedy Agyapong’s circle, including his role as Board Chairman of Ghana Gas and the appointment of his wife as Chairperson of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.
“How can one person benefit from the system and then turn around to undermine the very government that provided those opportunities—just to win applause?” he asked.
Addressing claims of irregularities in previous internal party elections, Ing Agyepong dismissed assertions that votes were lost or deliberately excluded.
He explained that concerns about possible cheating had been raised ahead of time and were addressed by the Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, who assured aspirants that safeguards were in place.
“That is why all of us have our representatives at the places where the ballot papers are being printed,” he said.
“As I speak, my representatives are there, and so are those of all the other candidates. If you say votes were lost, what were your representatives doing? Where are the documents to prove what you are saying?”
He further criticised what he described as a pattern of “explosive allegations” made without evidence, recalling past instances where similar accusations were circulated publicly without substantiation.
Ing Agyepong concluded by urging party members to reject misinformation and internal attacks, warning that a party that allows falsehoods to go unchallenged ultimately weakens itself and undermines its chances of electoral success.
