Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for holding a press conference calling for the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

According to Kwesi Pratt the Minority’s actions are misguided and damaging to Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy principles.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on January 21, 2026, Pratt expressed his displeasure while commenting on the Minority’s demand that President John Dramani Mahama relieve Ablakwa of his duties.

He accused the opposition lawmakers of ignoring global diplomatic realities and Ghana’s historic role in defending international law and sovereignty.

According to Pratt, several world leaders and governments including the United Kingdom, Russia, China and African states have openly condemned actions by US President Donald Trump, describing them as violations of international law.

He questioned why the Minority appeared unaware of these positions.

“The Prime Minister of Britain emphasised the point that what Donald Trump had done was in violation of international law. Russia issued a strong statement claiming that what Donald Trump had done was in violation of international law. China issued a similar statement.

“Did you read the statement which was issued and signed by the Foreign Minister of Namibia? So, this minority, where have they been all these years? They don’t even read statements. They don’t read statements from the AU. They don’t read statements…”

“They are not watching what Russia’s position is. They are not watching what China’s position is. Unbelievable.”

He added, “What are the principles that the minority is upholding in this matter? I’m so disgusted by this press conference. Why? What has the foreign ministry done today? Which is in violation of Ghana’s foreign policy. Of course, if you look at the history of the minority, you may forgive them.”

The Minority in Parliament, maintains that its call for Ablakwa’s removal is based on competence and not partisanship.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, accused the Foreign Affairs Minister of repeated diplomatic missteps that he claimed have harmed Ghana’s international reputation.

According to him, Ablakwa lacks the judgement, temperament and competence required to manage Ghana’s foreign relations effectively.
