In the city of Ho, Ghana, Zoomlion Ghana Limited is conducting a disinfection and disinfestation campaign in the Volta Region following recent floods. The measures were organized jointly with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council; they cover all 18 municipalities and districts in the region and are scheduled to be completed by September 19.

Treatment of markets and public facilities

Zoomlion Ghana Limited Regional Manager Emmanuel Amemaklor said the company was ready to provide personnel and logistics to reduce public health risks. He made the statement during a four-hour disinfection exercise at the Ho Central Market, MyJoyOnline reports.

According to Amemaklor, flooding in the Volta Region was less severe than in some other parts of the country, but the related health risks cannot be ignored. He noted that the risk of malaria may increase after floods due to mosquito breeding, while floodwaters can spread cholera and other waterborne diseases.

Measures in affected communities

The campaign covers not only markets but also transport terminals, schools, public toilets and other public facilities. According to the company representative, the work is being carried out free of charge as part of corporate social responsibility.

Regional environmental health officer Stella Kumedzro described the treatment as a timely measure to eliminate fecal contamination displaced by floodwaters and control disease vectors seeking new places to breed and live. She urged households to keep the areas around their homes clean and follow proper sanitation practices. The measures were later extended to Hodzo near Ho, one of the communities most affected by the floods.
