The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has called on financial institutions to provide businesses with financing tailored to the operational realities of energy efficiency projects.
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the AGI, Tsonam Akpeloo, said businesses needed appropriate financing alongside technical support to determine project costs, expected returns and potential savings before approaching financial institutions.
Speaking at the Sustainable Business and Green Finance Summit in Accra on Wednesday, September 10, 2026, Mr Akpeloo said the financing needs of businesses varied depending on the stage and nature of their energy efficiency projects.
“Some businesses are ready to discuss a financing proposal today. Others need help to establish project cost and demonstrate their expected returns,” he said.
He said the AGI Energy Centre Efficiency Network supports businesses with energy analysis, investment cost assessments, economic benefit analysis, as well as project implementation and monitoring.
The network also provides a platform for participating companies to share practical experiences in improving systems such as cooling, compressed air and steam, he said.
Mr Akpeloo said technical assessments could strengthen businesses’ financing proposals by providing evidence of the potential returns from energy efficiency investments.
“For industry, the financing conversation must then address affordability, repayment periods, collateral expectations, and the time it takes for an investment to begin delivering returns,” he said.
He therefore called on Development Bank Ghana, commercial banks and other investment partners to help bridge the gap between technical preparation and suitable financing for businesses.
“We therefore look to Development Bank Ghana, commercial banks, and other investment partners to help connect this technical preparation with suitable financing,” he said.
Mr Akpeloo said financial institutions could also support businesses that were not yet ready to secure financing by providing clear feedback on what was required to strengthen their proposals.
“Where a project is promising but not yet ready, clear feedback can help the enterprise take the next steps,” he said.
