Ghana is working with the European Union to address concerns over illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing that resulted in the country being issued a yellow card in 2021.
The issue was central to discussions in Rome between Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Emelia Arthur and officials of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE).
The meeting was held under the Ghana-EU Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing Dialogue Process.
Ghana’s progress in addressing the concerns that triggered the yellow card was reviewed, with the discussions also focusing on the measures required for the warning to be lifted.
The engagement comes as Ghana seeks to strengthen its systems for monitoring and controlling fishing activities in its waters.
The parties also discussed enforcement and the need to raise compliance standards within Ghana’s fisheries sector.
Another area of focus was the country’s legal framework, with discussions on updating domestic laws to improve fisheries governance and align Ghana’s practices with international standards.
The government is also seeking to protect the country’s marine resources and the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on fishing.
Ghana says addressing illegal fishing is important not only for the sustainability of fish stocks but also for protecting seafood export markets.
The discussions with the European Commission form part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Ghana and the EU on fisheries management.
Ghana is seeking to use the dialogue to resolve outstanding concerns and strengthen the management of its fisheries resources as part of its wider blue economy agenda.
