Africa has taken a major step towards strengthening its diplomatic capacity with the launch of the African Diplomatic Institutes Network (AfDIN) in Accra. AfDIN is a continental platform designed to harmonise diplomatic training, enhance collaboration among diplomatic academies and prepare a new generation of diplomats to advance Africa’s interests on the global stage.
The initiative, launched in partnership with the African Union Commission, is expected to create a permanent framework for collaboration among diplomatic training institutions through curriculum development, research, faculty exchanges, knowledge sharing and institutional capacity building, while aligning diplomatic education with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Launching the network on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Director of the Delivery Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Africa’s future diplomatic leadership.
He said AfDIN seeks to produce diplomats who are not only skilled in the art of diplomacy but are also deeply committed to advancing Africa’s continental agenda in an increasingly complex international environment.
Ambassador Ntrakwa said Ghana’s support for the initiative reflects its long-standing commitment to Pan-Africanism and African unity, recalling the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who established the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute in 1961 to train African liberation leaders and political activists from across the continent.
“Today, we might not be fighting liberation and colonialism, but the urgent threat to our collective development might be conflict prevention, peaceful cooperation, and advancing Africa’s interest in an increasingly complex international system,” he stated.
He noted that while Africa’s priorities have shifted from the struggle against colonialism to promoting peace, preventing conflict and advancing development, the need for highly trained diplomats has become even more critical.
According to him, the partnership between AfDIN and the African Union Commission will provide diplomatic institutes across Africa with greater opportunities for collaboration, enhanced curriculum development and direct access to the African Union’s expertise, ultimately leading to more consistent and informed representation of Africa’s interests globally.
Ambassador Ntrakwa expressed confidence that the successful operationalisation of the network would strengthen Africa’s diplomatic institutions and contribute to a new generation of leaders capable of championing the continent’s collective aspirations.
Director of Ghana’s Foreign Service Institute, Ambassador Perpetua Ofori Dufu, described the establishment of AfDIN as a defining moment in Africa’s diplomatic evolution.
She said Africa’s influence in global affairs will depend not only on the strength of its policies but also on the quality of the diplomats entrusted with advancing them.
Ambassador Ofori Dufu noted that the network offers an unprecedented opportunity for Africa’s diplomatic institutes to collaborate on research, curriculum development, faculty exchanges and knowledge management while harmonising diplomatic training around the continent’s shared vision under Agenda 2063.
She said Ghana was honoured that the African Union selected Accra to host the launch, describing the decision as recognition of the country’s historic commitment to African unity and institution-building.
Speaking on behalf of the African Union’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department, Head of the Peace and Security Council Secretariat, Ms. Neema Chusi, said the launch comes at a time when Africa is confronting increasingly complex governance, peace and security challenges amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
She said these realities require diplomats with the skills and strategic outlook to anticipate emerging risks, promote dialogue and champion African solutions to African challenges.
Ms. Chusi stressed that diplomacy remains Africa’s first line of defence against conflict, noting that effective preventive diplomacy, mediation, early warning and post-conflict reconstruction all depend on well-trained diplomatic professionals.
She called for close collaboration between AFDIN and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council to strengthen understanding of the Council’s mandate and improve Africa’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts through diplomacy.
The launch was accompanied by a high-level lecture by AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, on proactive diplomacy and Africa’s peace and security architecture.
The lecture marked the start of a two-day meeting focused on developing a sustainable framework for cooperation, knowledge sharing and capacity building among diplomatic training institutions across the continent.
