The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) on Thursday marked the Day of the Seafarer at its Tema Branch, honouring the vital role of seafarers in sustaining the global maritime industry.
The Director General Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt. Rtd), said: “global economy thrives on the back of the maritime sector.”
He announced the upcoming rollout of the National Seafarer Development Policy, which he said will provide a framework to expand seafaring as a viable career path for young people.
Dr Ali linked the initiative to Ghana’s maritime heritage, recalling Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s Black Star Line as a foundation for the country’s seafaring legacy.
On his part, the Deputy Director General, Mr Mubarick Masawudu, unveiled the National Seafarer Development Placement Programme, an ambitious plan to enhance sea-time opportunities for Ghanaian youth through partnerships with global shipowners and manning agencies.
He described seafarers as the “invisible force” driving global trade and reaffirmed GMA’s commitment to their welfare through digital transformation, mental health support, and career guidance.
The celebration was marked by a symbolic gesture in which GMA management stepped away from their desks to assist seafarers directly with certification, demonstrating the Authority’s deep appreciation for those who keep global trade moving.
