2026 World Cup: Thomas Partey in Uncertainty Before Ghana’s Opening Match

As Ghana gears up for its first match in the 2026 World Cup, concerns are swirling around Thomas Partey. The Black Stars midfielder, seen as one of the most experienced players on the team, is reportedly facing administrative issues that could jeopardize his participation in the upcoming clash against Panama in Canada.

According to several international media outlets, including The Athletic, the former Arsenal player has encountered obstacles regarding his entry into Canadian territory. This news, quickly picked up by the Ghanaian press, has raised many questions among the public and Black Stars supporters as the tournament kicks off.

However, despite the growing rumors, no official confirmation has been provided by Canadian authorities regarding a potential visa denial or entry ban for the Ghanaian player. This lack of official communication keeps the situation murky and casts doubt on the midfielder’s availability for Ghana’s first World Cup match.

In light of the rising speculation, Ghana’s Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, sought to clarify the situation. He stated that no official notification has been received regarding a Canadian visa denial for Thomas Partey. The government official explained that he was only informed of previous administrative difficulties concerning the acquisition of a U.S. visa. According to him, those issues have been resolved in recent weeks.

This situation comes at a delicate time for the player. Thomas Partey is currently facing legal proceedings in the UK, with multiple accusations of rape and sexual assault against him. The player has firmly denied all allegations and has pleaded not guilty in British courts. His case is still ongoing, and no conviction has been made to date.

Despite this sensitive legal situation, Ghana’s coach has chosen to keep faith in his vice-captain by including him in the official squad for the 2026 World Cup. His high-level experience and importance to the team’s balance continue to make him a key figure for Ghana.

At this stage, there is no official indication that Thomas Partey will be barred from playing in Ghana’s other matches scheduled in the United States, including those in Boston and Philadelphia. Ghanaian authorities are reassuring on this front, stating that any potential issues regarding his U.S. visa have been resolved.

So, the uncertainty mainly revolves around the trip to Canada for the match against Panama. While waiting for an official clarification from the relevant authorities, Ghanaian supporters remain anxious. An absence of Thomas Partey would be a significant blow for the Black Stars, who rely on the experience and leadership of their midfielder to make a strong start in the tournament and pursue their ambitions on the world stage.
