Rabat – Mexico face South Africa tonight at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match marks the official start of the first 48-team World Cup, hosted across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Mexico enters the tournament as one of the three host nations, while South Africa returns to the World Cup stage for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.

Both teams are in Group A alongside South Korea and Czechia, making the opening game important for their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Match details:

  • Fixture: Mexico vs South Africa
  • Competition: FIFA World Cup 2026, Group A
  • Venue: Estadio Azteca / Mexico City Stadium, Mexico City
  • Date: Thursday, June 11
  • Kick-off: 8:00 p.m. Morocco time
  • How to watch: beIN Sports, FOX Sports, ITV1, SuperSport

Mexico team news

Situation: Mexico begin the World Cup under major pressure. Playing at home gives them a huge advantage, but it also brings big expectations from their supporters.

Javier Aguirre’s team will want a strong start, especially in a group where every point matters.

Mexico are favorites because of their home crowd, experience, and recent form, but opening matches are rarely easy.

Injuries/Doubts: Mexico had some fitness concerns before the tournament, with players such as César Montes, Edson Álvarez, Luis Chávez, and Alexis Vega dealing with issues in the buildup. However, several of them featured in the final warm-up matches, giving Mexico hope of having an experienced group available.

Recent form: Mexico enter the opener with confidence. They are unbeaten in their last eight matches and recently produced a strong 5-1 win over Serbia, which gave the team momentum before the tournament.

Key players: Santiago Gimenez is expected to lead the attack and carry Mexico’s main scoring threat. Edson Alvarez gives the team leadership and strength in midfield, while Guillermo Ochoa brings World Cup experience in goal.

Likely approach: Mexico are expected to start fast, use the energy of the stadium, and attack through wide areas.

The first goal will be important to settle the home crowd and reduce pressure on the players.

South Africa team news

Situation: South Africa arrive as underdogs, but they are not here only to participate. Hugo Broos’ side qualified after a difficult campaign and will try to repeat the spirit of 2010, when South Africa opened the World Cup against Mexico and drew 1-1.

Injuries/Doubts: Aubrey Modiba had been an injury concern, but he returned to training and is expected to be available.

Recent form: South Africa’s recent results have been mixed. They have struggled to turn possession into goals, but they remain organized and difficult to break down.

Key players: Teboho Mokoena will be important in midfield, while Percy Tau can give South Africa creativity and speed in attack.

Lyle Foster could also play a key role if South Africa find space on the counter.

Likely approach: South Africa will likely defend compactly, stay patient, and look for quick transitions. They know Mexico will have more of the ball, so discipline will be key.

What to expect

Mexico should control possession and push from the first whistle. The atmosphere at the Azteca will be intense, and the hosts will want to give their fans the perfect opening night.

South Africa will try to stay calm, slow the rhythm, and frustrate Mexico. If they survive the early pressure, the match could become tense.

For Mexico, anything less than a win would feel like a setback. For South Africa, a draw would be a strong result and could open the door to qualification hopes.

Safe bets

Mexico to win: The hosts have more quality and home advantage.

Under 3.5 goals: Opening matches are usually tight and emotional.

Mexico over 1.5 goals: If Mexico score early, they can open the game.

Prediction: Mexico 2-0 South Africa.
