City authorities in Accra have commenced the demolition of a multi-storey building at Osu in the Korle Klottey Municipality following a structural failure that left the edifice dangerously unstable.

The demolition comes a day after another building collapsed at North Industrial Area at Avenor in Accra, which claimed two lives.

Excavators were at the site in Osu on Monday, June 8, carrying out demolition works on the structure. The building, originally constructed as a seven-storey, reportedly lost three floors after they gave way. The remaining four-storey is standing but has been structurally compromised according to the engineers.

The ongoing demolition is aimed at eliminating safety risks to nearby residents, motorists, and surrounding properties amid growing concerns over ageing and weakened buildings in the capital.

The exercise comes after another building collapsed at Adenta on June 3, killing and injuring several others.

Authorities say the Osu demolition forms part of broader precautionary measures to reduce the risk of building collapses and improve public safety across the Greater Accra Region.
