President John Dramani Mahama begins a five day state visit to Belarus today, with discussions expected to centre on agriculture, trade, education and investment cooperation between the two countries.
The visit was announced in a statement issued on June 5, 2026, by the Presidency. President Mahama is undertaking the trip at the invitation of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
During the visit, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Lukashenko in Minsk before participating in an expanded meeting involving ministers and senior officials from Ghana and Belarus.
The discussions are expected to cover a number of proposed agreements, including arrangements relating to agricultural mechanisation, export financing, education and trade cooperation.
In March, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov said discussions with Ghana included a proposal for the supply of about 3,000 units of agricultural machinery, including tractors, seeders and ploughs, as well as service centres and training programmes for local specialists.
The two countries have also held discussions on increasing trade in agricultural products, including dairy and meat products.
As part of the official programme, President Mahama will lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in Minsk in honour of soldiers and partisans who died during the Second World War.
The President will also travel to Brest, where he is scheduled to visit a dairy processing facility. He is further expected to tour the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex and the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Several agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, including a visa waiver arrangement for holders of diplomatic and official passports and an agreement on the establishment of an Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.
Education is also expected to feature in the discussions, with Ghana seeking opportunities for increased academic exchanges, particularly in the fields of medicine and agriculture.
President Mahama is expected to return to Accra on June 9, 2026.
