‘You are a dictator’ – Ras Mubarak blasts NDC Chairman

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Abdulai Mohammed Mubarak, widely known as Ras Mubarak, has criticised comments and actions of the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, which he believes are undermining consensus-building within the party.

According to him such behaviour could damage party unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV monitored by GhanaWeb on June 5, 2026, Ras Mubarak argued that it was “inappropriate” for a National Chairman to use his position in a way that gives him an unfair advantage in internal party contests.

He further accused Asiedu Nketiah of failing to act as a consensus builder, suggesting that his leadership style was increasingly divisive

“You can’t be the National Chairman and want to use that as an opportunity to give yourself a head start in an election that is one and a half years away.

“For me, I’m happy because, apart from everything else, he’s shooting himself in the foot because one, he’s demonstrated that he’s not a consensus builder. He’s demonstrated that, you know, as a leader, he’s a dictator”, he stated.

Ras Mubarak pointed out Asiedu Nketiah’s recent comments on the restructuring of the party’s parliamentary in 2023, as well as, disclosures about initial disagreement with President John Dramani Mahama over the removal or replacement of the then Minority Leader in Parliament.

He said the move had exposed deeper tensions within the party, particularly over respect for leadership structures and the role of the party’s flagbearer.

Ras Mubarak stressed that public disagreements involving senior party figures risked projecting disunity, especially when referencing former President John Mahama, whom he said should not be publicly portrayed in a way that undermines his authority within the party.

“You don’t disrespect a sitting president by saying the sort of things that he said. And I just couldn’t believe it, given his experience in politics and everything else,” he added.

He also compared leadership styles across different NDC administrations, citing former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills, who, according to him demonstrated consensus-building qualities.

Ras Mubarak warned that if such internal tensions persist, the party risks weakening its cohesion and electoral prospects.

“Well, he’s telling the country that he’s a dictator… So, as far as, the chairmanship role is concerned, it’s beginning to appear to be a disaster,” he added.
