Mahama directs school feeding programme to absorb surplus

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the school feeding programme to absorb excess eggs in the market as a temporary measure to resolve the egg glut.

The directive comes as egg suppliers in parts of the country have called on the government to intervene in a trade impasse with Burkina Faso, which has halted egg exports for more than two months.

The suspension has led to a glut in the local market, affecting prices and threatening the livelihoods of poultry farmers and distributors.

President Mahama, who was speaking during a citizen engagement at the University of Development Studies on Sunday, April 19, in the Northern Region as part of his resetting tour, said the government is working to resolve export challenges.

“As I speak now, there’s a glut in the production of eggs. Poultry farmers are complaining that they can’t get a market for their eggs. And so, because of the poultry programs and all that we’ve done, the supply of eggs has increased.

And that’s why I’ve said that we should find a way of getting the school feeding program to absorb the eggs and give it to our children to eat. If we can’t sell it, let our children eat the eggs,” he said
