GHS says tricycles are not ambulances under health scheme

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has dismissed as false and misleading viral social media reports suggesting that recently procured tricycles under the government’s Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) initiative are being used as ambulances.

In a press release signed by the Director-General, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Service clarified that the tricycles were never intended to function as ambulances. Instead, they form part of a long-standing strategy to improve outreach health services, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.

According to the GHS, the deployment of tricycles and motorbikes is a key component of the ongoing implementation of the government’s flagship FPHC policy. The initiative is aimed at strengthening last-mile healthcare delivery across rural, peri-urban, and remote areas in Ghana.

The Service explained that the tricycles are specifically designed to support frontline health workers, especially Community Health Nurses operating within the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) system. Unlike motorbikes, the tricycles are equipped with cargo compartments that allow for the safe transportation of medical supplies, vaccines, cold chain equipment, diagnostic tools, and educational materials needed for outreach and home visits.

GHS further highlighted that the tricycles offer improved safety and stability, particularly on difficult terrains, and are more user-friendly for a wider range of health workers. This includes female health professionals, enhancing inclusivity and protection during field operations, especially under harsh weather conditions.

The Service emphasized that this intervention is part of broader efforts by the government and the Ministry of Health to ensure equitable access to quality primary healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has therefore urged the public to disregard misinformation circulating on social media and to rely on verified sources for accurate information regarding national health initiatives.
