A Catholic Priest, Rev. Albert Henry Candler, played yeoman’s role in pioneering education in the Northern Territories at a time when the value of the subject had not yet been appreciated.

He is credited with the acquisition of the part of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital called Education Ridge Lands.

He acquired it because his dream at the time was to have established various educational institutions to advance the acquisition of Western Education.

Today, that part of the sprawling city of Tamale is home to schools such as Tamale Senior High School initially called Government Secondary School, Tamale Technical University, the College of Education previously Bagabaga Training College.

He acquired the land from the Choggu Chief, Naa Sugrie in 1926.

The land was given a Certificate of Allocation (COA) by an Act of Parliament in 1961.

When he died in 1933, his body was cremated and the ashes thereof buried under this epitaph, according to his wish, in London.
