University of Ghana immortalises GK Nukunya

The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana, Legon has immortalised Professor Emeritus Godwin Kwaku Nukunya, one of Ghana’s exceptional Anthropologists and a former Head of the Department by renaming its Graduate Seminar Room after him.

It was renamed ‘Professor Emeritus Godwin Kwaku Nukunya Seminar Room’ at a ceremony held at the Department of Sociology today August 26, 2026 Prof Emeritus Nukunya died on January 6, 2023 at the age of 88.

The Late Professor who studied for his Bachelors Degree in Sociology at the University of Ghana in 1961, obtained the PhD in Social Anthropology in 1964 at the London School of Economics. His doctoral thesis was on ‘Kinship and Marriage among the Anlo-Ewe’, after which he was given the responsibility of teaching all three Social Anthropology courses including Social Structure of West African Societies.

He also taught at the University of Calabar for six years from 1981 to 1987.

In 1992, he was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. He also served on several university committees and state boards in and outside Ghana.

Speaker after speaker at the ceremony eulogized the extraordinary academic, making mention of the students he had mentored and trained in his illustrious career.

Professor Emeritus also authored one of the most sought after books in the study of Sociology – Tradition and Change in Ghana”.
