Ghana’s Embassy in Luanda holds reception to mark 69th Independence Anniversary

Accra, March 13, GNA- Madam Marvis Esi Kusorgbor, Ghana’s Ambassador to Angola, with concurrent accreditation to São Tomé and Príncipe and Madagascar has hosted a reception at the Chancery of the Embassy in Luanda to commemorate the 69th Anniversary of Ghana’s Independence.

The event brought together senior officials of the Angolan Government, Ambassadors of other countries, members of the diplomatic corps, the business community, and the Ghanaian community in Angola.
The Guest of Honour for the occasion was Mrs. Mara Domingos Quiosa, Vice-President of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA).

Other notable dignitaries included Mrs. Arlete Leona Chimbinda, Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola; and Tete António, Minister for External Relations of Angola; Vicente Soares, President of the Angola Chamber of Commerce and Calunga Francisco Zage Quissanga, Vice Governor (Technical and Infrastructure Sector) of the Luanda Province.

Held on the theme “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope” the celebration highlighted Ghana’s historic independence in 1957 under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Ambassador Kusorgbor noted that the landmark achievement which inspired liberation movements across Africa, continued to shape Ghana’s legacy as a resilient democracy and champion of continental integration.

This year’s celebration also coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Angola, reaffirming the strong bonds between the two nations, rooted in Pan-African solidarity, shared liberation struggles, and common aspirations for economic growth and development.

In her remarks, Ambassador Kusorgbor commended both countries for deepening cooperation across key sectors and advancing initiatives that promoted mobility between their citizens.
She highlighted the recent Visa Waiver Agreement for holders of Diplomatic and Service passports, with the expectation of extending the arrangement to holders of ordinary passports.
She also announced plans for a Ghana–Angola Business Forum in Luanda to promote investment and private-sector collaboration, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

She encouraged Angolan investors and entrepreneurs to explore Ghana’s dynamic business environment and attractive investment incentives, emphasizing the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships.

Ambassador Kusorgbor expressed appreciation to the President of Angola, President João Gonçalves Lourenço, the Government, and the people of Angola for the posthumous national honours conferred on Ghana’s distinguished sons, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Kofi Annan, in recognition of their contributions to Angola’s independence, peace, and development—an enduring symbol of the deep historical ties between the two nations.

Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to African integration and multilateral cooperation, the Ambassador referenced Ghana’s role as the African Union Champion on Reparations.

She highlighted ongoing efforts with AU Member States and the African diaspora to advance a unified continental position on historical justice relating to the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation, seeking acknowledgment, accountability, healing, and structural transformation as a matter of justice and dignity.

The Ghanaians in Angola were also acknowledged for their contributions to the cordial relations that existed between Ghana and Angola.
They were also encouraged to remain engaged, through trade and remittances, in the collective effort to achieve Ghana’s development agenda.

Ambassador Kusorgbor emphasised Ghana’s strong belief in bilateral and multilateral partnerships and called on Angola, African partners, and the international community to continue to work together to address shared development challenges, promote peace and security, create opportunities for all, in the common pursuit of a future of shared prosperity.
