Accra, March 14, GNA – Ghana and the Russian Federation have held a technical session of political consultations in Accra to review the state of bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting, held on March 12 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together officials from both countries to discuss strengthening collaboration across several sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, energy, technology transfer, and industrial development.
Ghana’s delegation was led by Eric Owusu-Boaten, Director of the Europe Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Russian side was headed by Anatoly Bashkin, Director of the Department of African States of the Russian Federation.
Mr Harold Adlai Agyeman, Coordinating Director of Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, opening the session, highlighted the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Russia.
He noted that the 68-year partnership between the two countries had been built on trust, mutual respect, and solidarity.
He said the relationship had been sustained through political dialogue, economic cooperation, educational exchanges, and collaboration within multilateral frameworks.
During the consultations, both sides reviewed bilateral trade relations and discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure development, and energy.
The two countries also explored expanding university partnerships, particularly in science, engineering, technology, and medicine, while considering enhanced cooperation in technical and vocational education and training as well as capacity building.
Officials further reviewed existing cooperation frameworks and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing outstanding bilateral agreements and strengthening relations through sustained diplomatic engagement.
On regional and multilateral issues, the delegations exchanged views on developments in the Sahel and preparations toward the Third Russia–Africa Summit scheduled for October 2026.
Following the consultations, the head of the Russian delegation paid a courtesy call on the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, where both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the discussions.
During the engagement, Ghana also requested Russia’s cooperation in holding accountable a Russian citizen allegedly involved in the non-consensual publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women.
The Ghanaian side raised concerns about the reported enlistment of Ghanaian youth in Russia’s ongoing special operations, with both parties agreeing to work together to address the matter.
The consultations form part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding areas of cooperation between Ghana and the Russian Federation.
