The most anticipated match in the country’s premier rugby competition between rivals KCB and Kabras Sugar was abandoned on Saturday, during Round 10 of the Kenya Cup 25/26 season after the KCB Sports Club pitch was declared unplayable due to a heavy downpour.

Both sides had fought to a 10–10 draw in the first half, but when they returned after the break, they simply shook hands to signal the end of the match.

According to Kenya Rugby Union’s Director of Rugby, Paul Odera, the game was abandoned after centre referee Kevin Wambugu ruled the pitch at the den unsafe for play.

KCB vs Kabras Sugar thriller ends early after pitch deemed unplayable

“Unfortunately, we had to witness the abandonment of the Kenya Cup match between KCB Rugby and Kabras Sugar due to the extreme weather. We managed to complete the first half, but at halftime, referee Kevin Wambugu determined the pitch was unplayable, citing player safety,” Odera explained.

Odera noted how disappointing the situation was and confirmed the matter would now be referred to the Fixtures and Leagues Committee to determine the next steps.

“It was unfortunate because it had been a very good game. We will now be guided by the regulations through the Fixtures and Leagues Committee, which will review the available options, whether the result will stand or if the match will be replayed at a later date,” he said.

Should the rules require both teams to share the spoils, Kabras would have plenty to smile about as they would continue to sit comfortably at the top of the table while maintaining their remarkable four-season unbeaten streak, extending it to 51 matches.

KCB vs Kabras Sugar match report

KCB came into this one determined to snap that run, and they threw absolutely everything at the Sugar Millers.

They pinned them inside their 22 and capitalised on a few unforced errors, though luck did not exactly side with the Bankers in the opening 20 minutes.

Brian Wahinya came close to giving the hosts an early lead just four minutes into the match after KCB won a penalty from a scrum, but his effort rattled the crossbar.

The Bankers nonetheless maintained control in what was an intense contest, with both teams showing strong intent from kickoff

For the first 15 minutes, Kabras barely managed to escape their own 22. KCB, feeding off the energy of the home crowd, dominated possession and territory.

After Wahinya missed two penalty opportunities, he finally made no mistake with a third – slotting it through the posts to give the Bankers a 3–0 lead.

KCB eventually stretched their advantage with a brilliantly executed try on the right wing. Fidel Maina surged through Kabras’ defensive line to dot down, and Wahinya added the extras for a 10–0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Kabras, however, weathered the storm. They slowly fought their way back into the contest, and their persistence paid off in the 28th minute.

A powerful maul inside KCB’s 22 saw them crash over for five points, with Eric Cantona adding the conversion.

The final quarter of the first half belonged entirely to Kabras. They pinned the Bankers deep in their own half, and just a minute before the break, they earned a penalty that Cantona calmly slotted to level the scores at 10–10.

But just as the second half was about to kick off, the match was abandoned cutting short what promised to be an explosive finish. With just one round left before the playoffs, both sides now wait anxiously to see how the ruling will unfold.
