Inside Kakuma refugee camp, home to approximately 300,000 displaced individuals from over twenty nations, a small but rapidly growing congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has emerged as a beacon of hope. What began as a modest gathering of believers has now blossomed into a fully organized branch, marking a historic milestone for the Church in one of Africa’s most challenging environments.
A Sanctuary of Faith Amidst Adversity
Kakuma refugee camp, nestled in Kalobeyei Village, serves as a temporary home for those fleeing war, persecution, and instability across the African continent. Among them, a dedicated group of refugees—united by their testimony of Jesus Christ—have transformed their shared struggles into an opportunity for spiritual growth. Their journey mirrors that of the early Latter-day Saint pioneers, who faced unimaginable hardships yet persevered with unwavering faith.
On June 19, 2025, Elder Johnny O. Baddoo, an Area Seventy in the Church’s Africa Central Area, traveled to Kakuma to minister to this “small but faithful group.” Accompanying him were Kenya Nairobi West Mission President Onward Chivunga and Second Counselor President Meshack Odunga, whose visit carried profound significance. Just months earlier, on April 6, 2025, President Odunga had presided over the official organization of the Kakuma Branch, a momentous occasion that now places the congregation under the leadership of the newly established Kenya Kisumu Mission.
From Six to Over a Hundred: A Testimony of Growth
The transformation of the Kakuma Branch is nothing short of extraordinary. Before its formal establishment, the nearest organized Latter-day Saint unit was 419 kilometers (260 miles) away—a daunting distance for refugees already navigating immense challenges. However, through donated resources and collective effort, the members secured internet connectivity and constructed a meeting shed, creating a space for worship and fellowship within the camp.
Today, the branch boasts over 100 members, a 16-fold increase from its humble beginnings of just six baptized believers. This growth is not merely numerical; it is a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity. As President Odunga reminded the congregation during its founding, “You are the pioneers in this place, and you have all [that] it takes to grow the Church here.”

“Whenever we meet as brothers and sisters, the Lord is in our presence. God knows each one of us. He knows why we are here, He understands our challenges, and He invites us to live His commandments so we can draw closer to Him.”
His words echoed the divine promise that suffering, though difficult, can refine and strengthen the faithful. Similarly, President Chivunga urged members to demonstrate their love for Christ through obedience and prayer, citing John 14:15:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
He testified of God’s perfect love, assuring the congregation that a firm foundation in Christ provides unshakable strength in times of trial. His message was clear: faith, when tested, becomes a catalyst for growth.

“Please remember the journey traveled by the early pioneers of the Church. If it wasn’t for their sacrifice and determination, we don’t know what would have happened. Sometimes suffering refines us, and we ask that you have great faith in the Lord as the author and finisher of everything.”
