Entebbe — Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), hosted Charlene Ruto, the daughter of Kenyan President William Ruto, during a courtesy visit at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, provided an opportunity to strengthen social and diplomatic relations between Uganda and Kenya.

Ms. Ruto was accompanied by a delegation that included Mr. George Nkya, Honorary Consul of Morocco, alongside Mr. Festus Orina, Ms. Varsheeni Ragupathy, and Hon. Jane Frances Acilo.

During the engagement, Gen Kainerugaba welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the visit. Ms. Ruto, in turn, thanked the General for the hospitality extended to her and her team.

The visit comes shortly after Gen Kainerugaba indicated on his official social media platform that he planned to visit President Ruto in Kenya, signaling continued efforts to strengthen regional ties.

Uganda and Kenya share deep historical, cultural, and economic connections as members of the East African Community (EAC).

The two countries are linked by cross-border communities that share languages, cultural traditions, and ancestral heritage, contributing to strong people-to-people relations.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

Bilateral trade between the two nations remains a key pillar of regional economic integration. In 2025, Uganda–Kenya trade volumes exceeded USD 1.5 billion, reflecting growing commercial exchange between the partners.

Kenya plays a strategic logistical role for Uganda, serving as the primary gateway for international trade through the Mombasa Port, which handles a significant share of Uganda’s imports and exports.

Officials say the strong diplomatic, economic, and institutional relationship between Kampala and Nairobi contributes to regional stability, security cooperation, and economic growth across East Africa.
