Ida Odinga Reveals What Raila Told Her the Evening Before He Died

Ida Odinga has revealed details of her final conversation with her husband, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, on the evening before his death.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, October 14, Ida said they spoke at length about ordinary matters and that nothing in their conversation suggested he was unwell.

“There was no alarm, and there was nothing that could suggest he was unwell,” she said, adding that Raila assured her he was fine.

The following morning, Ida received a call from Raila’s sister, Dr Akinyi, who asked her to contact another sister, Ruth Adhiambo, who was with him in India.

“Things don’t seem to be right,” Dr Akinyi reportedly told her.

Ida did not disclose what Ruth told her during their subsequent conversation.

Earlier, Ida explained that Raila had travelled abroad for a medical check-up. She said he underwent examinations for four days and was given a clean bill of health before deciding to take a short holiday in Kerala, India.

She also said Raila had asked their children to meet him in Dubai, while she remained in Nairobi to attend to other commitments.

Raila died in India on October 15, 2025. His first death anniversary falls on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Ida’s account offers a personal glimpse into the final hours before the former prime minister’s death, as the family prepares to mark the anniversary.
