BREAKING NEWS: EPRA Announces Sharp Increase In Fuel Prices, Details

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has increased fuel prices in Kenya, raising the cost of petrol by Ksh12.93 per litre, diesel by Ksh9.90 and kerosene by Ksh28.49 amid rising international oil prices.

Under the new pricing announced on Wednesday, October 14, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh226.96 per litre in Nairobi, while diesel will cost Ksh227.76. Kerosene prices have also risen to Ksh219.87 per litre.

The latest increases are expected to put additional pressure on households and businesses that rely on fuel for transportation, cooking and other daily activities.

Speaking during a press briefing, EPRA Director General Edward Mwirigi Kinyua attributed the rising costs to international market pressures linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Kinyua said September had been the most difficult month since the conflict began, with international petrol prices rising sharply.

“September has been the worst month ever since this war broke out. Super petrol has reached USD 1,300 per metric tonne from the initial USD 600 per metric tonne,” he stated.

The regulator also pointed to an increase in the landing cost of imported petroleum products as another factor behind the new pump prices.

According to EPRA, the landing cost for Super Petrol rose by 11.81 per cent, increasing from USD874 to USD977 per cubic metre in September.

The changes come at a time when motorists and businesses are already facing pressure from the cost of running vehicles and transporting goods across the country.

Higher diesel prices could also affect public transport operators, farmers and traders who depend on fuel-powered vehicles to move passengers and commodities.

The increase in kerosene prices is likely to place additional financial pressure on households that use the fuel for cooking and lighting.

The latest review marks another significant adjustment in Kenya’s petroleum market as international oil prices continue to influence the cost of imported fuel.

EPRA’s announcement comes amid growing public concern over the impact of rising fuel costs on the cost of living.
