An 18-year-old male is alleged to have attacked the security officer at the hospital An 18-year-old male is alleged to have attacked the security officer at the hospital

The security officer who was assaulted at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, formerly known as Ridge Hospital, has recounted the events that led to the confrontation and the attack that caused him to collapse.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV from his hospital bed, the officer explained that he was carrying out his routine closing duties, which are typically done around 6:30 p.m. each day.

According to the elderly officer, while beginning the exercise, he noticed a young man standing at the entrance.

He said he politely asked the gentleman to step aside so he could shut the door, as hospital regulations do not allow visitors to loiter around ward entrances outside approved visiting hours.

He stated that the request appeared to anger the young man, who allegedly warned him to be careful or risk being beaten. Although a bystander stepped in and tried to calm the situation, tensions escalated.

The officer said the young man eventually punched him and pushed him to the ground. He fell and hit his head, losing consciousness in the process. He added that when he regained awareness, he found himself lying on a hospital bed receiving treatment.

“He was standing close to the gate and I wanted to close it, so I asked him to move back a little. He told me he didn’t like that and warned that if I told him to go back again, he would slap me. A man nearby asked him if he realised that the person he was threatening could be his father.

“I then told the man to leave him alone and said if he wasn’t beating his father at home, he wouldn’t speak to me that way. That was when he got angry, hit me, and pushed me to the ground,” the man narrated.

In a press statement dated February 20, 2026, management of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital confirmed that the incident occurred on February 18, 2026, at about 7:28 p.m. at the Labour Ward.

The hospital further indicated that an 18-year-old male, identified as Gabriel Dimson, who had accompanied his mother and a friend to the facility, is alleged to have carried out the attack on the security officer.
