George Afriyie Raises Alarm Over Premier League Officiating Standards

Some Ghana Premier League match officials

Former Vice President of Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has voiced serious concerns about the quality of officiating in the ongoing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League, warning that it threatens the credibility of the competition.

The league, which began on a positive note with a noticeable rise in fan attendance across various match venues, has in recent weeks been marred by controversial refereeing decisions and allegations of misconduct. These issues, Afriyie believes, have taken the shine off what was initially a promising season.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Afriyie acknowledged the strong start to the campaign but expressed deep worry over its current direction.

“The Premier League started very well, and attendance increased at the various venues, but the allegations and poor officiating have soiled the integrity of the league, and it is worrying and concerning,” he stated.

He called on league managers and the GFA to act decisively to address the challenges, stressing the need for accountability within the refereeing structure.

According to him, changes at the top of the Referees Management Committee could form part of the solution.

“I don’t want to rate the league, but what I will say is that those running the league must sit up and do the right thing. I think that the GFA should consider changing the Chairman or Chairperson of the Referees Management Committee as part of the solution to dealing with poor officiating,” Afriyie added.

Despite the growing concerns surrounding officiating, the Ghana Premier League is expected to continue as planned, with Matchday 21 fixtures scheduled to be played at their respective venues across the country.
